Why is Cave Story considered to be 8-bit?

It always kinda bugs me when people refer to Cave Story as an 8-bit game, even though an 8-bit system would NOT be able to handle Cave Story's content. Ballos, the Core, Monster X, and Puu Black are just some things an 8-bit system would have a nearly impossible (if not impossible) time handling. Not to mention the music could be much more 8-bit if Pixel wanted it to be.

Actually, it bugs me even more when the WiiWare port is referred to as 16-bit. I don't even understand this one.

they mean the art style
people don't want to say "cave story is a game with an 8-bit art style" so they just say "cave story is an 8-bit game"
although people don't really say that that often anyway

although people don't really say that that often anyway
But the graphics are more akin to the 16-bit era of consoles. Hell people even call it the NES gave that never was despite the fact that it looks and plays nothing like any NES game ever made.

Most people say anything that has pixel graphics is 8-bit.

Most people are incorrect.

Truthfully, tons upon tons of indie games possess this faux-retro visual aesthetic you speak of; however, naturally, that also means that the game isn't nearly as old as it looks.
