forgive me for being a noob and asking this noob question, but how do i get downloaded mods to work? when i download them what i find in the zip file is the application and all the data just scattered around, shouldn't they be in folders? i tried putting them in a backup CS folder, half my problem was, there was a lot of crap in there i wasn't sure where to put.

Maybe you didn't extract the zip into subdirectories?

Well, when you extract the zip, there should be an option "Extract into subdirectories" or something like that. I neither use WinZIP nor use the English language in my programs, so excuse possible inaccuracies.

Use WinRAR. What's wrong with you?
Most of the mods are stand-alone, so you can just put them wherever you want and start playing. For any mod you need to combine with Cave Story: put everything in the mod folder into the same directory as doukutsu, exe. Don't move any files around; keep the folders as subdirectories.

I guess your only choice is to rearrange and organise the stuff in that messed up zip file yourself.

Code:
[FONT="Tahoma"][B][U]Heres how (if you're not sure):[/U][/B]

1) What you should have in the mod folder:
- XXXXX.exe
- DoConfig.exe
- Config.dat (the saved settings made in DoConfig.exe)
[There only if settings have been changed in DoConfig.exe]
- window.rect (the saved setting for window mode made in DoConfig.exe)
[If it's there, game will be ran in window mode. Size changable in DoConfig.exe]
- "data" folder

2) In the Data folder, there are 2 sub-folders: "Stage" and "Npc"
- All NpcXXXXX.bmp/.pbm files should be in the "Npc" folder
- All PrtXXXXX.bmp/.pbm files should be in the "Stage" folder
- All XXXXX.pxa, .pxe, .pxm and .tsc files should be in the "Stage" folder
[These files contain information about the maps in the game]
[Head.tsc, ArmsItem.tsc, Credit.tsc and StageSelect.tsc and npc.tbl left
in "data" folder]
- Arms, ArmsImage, Bullet, Caret, casts, Face, Fade, ItemImage,
Loading, MyChar, StageImage, TextBox, Title and bkXXXXX .bmp/.pbm
files should be left in the "data" folder.[/FONT]

Download the mod and extract it into wherever Dokutsu.exe is.
And follow Metalogz's way of rearranging.
