Yes, for a small man those mushrooms would be pretty fearsome, so protection would be needed. And ditto on the blade. Or maybe he didn't want his crappy nemesis.

So, the Littles. They're obviously a human subspecies, like the three other Crown Bears, that evolved to be extremely tiny. I have no idea how they got onto the Island, though. Maybe an entire colony of them lives there, and Quote only notices three Littles. Maybe they stowed away on the helicopter (can't be too hard for them). Maybe Quote hallucinated them.
