It's time. It's happening. It's like a month and a half earlier than the other times.

So, the fourth kanpachi awards! That's like, one less than the fifth!
This year, the awards aren't being run by just one person, but rather a council of five. These five are the people whom I trust the most on the forums and also I have on Skype. They are myself, Tpcool, MagicDoors, Noxid, and Polaris. Our good HaydenStudios was kind enough to allow me to take the reins, but I was not one to keep all responsibility to myself. The council has had a lengthy discussion and has decided on this list of categories:

Code:
Bests |"Bests"
Best contributor to Cave Story Discussion|"Best" contributor to Cave Story Discussion
Most Promising New Member | N/A
Best Post |"Best" Post
Best First Post |"Best" First Post
Best Self-Picture | N/A
Most Unexpected Return | N/A
Nicest User |"Nicest User"
N/A | Best Ragequit
Best Theory |"Best" Theory
Best Mod |"Best" Mod
Best Fan Creation | N/A
Best Thread |"Best" Thread
Best VM Conversation* |"Best" VM Conversation*

*We can't think of anything to nominate for these. If you guys can, we'll include them.
Feel free to suggest other categories, save for Most Improved (yes, people improved this year, but it didn't do much) and Most Misunderstood (windy won it, nobody other than windy ever will win it, the point was made.) An executive decision was made by the council not to include these.

This year, trophies will be provided by the highly generous MagicDoors. What they are is a secret. :3
Nominations run from now until 12:01 January 1st, my time. During that time, all nominations will be accepted. From January 1st to 12:01 January 8th my time, nominations will be accepted if a majority of the council accepts the nomination. Voting will take place from January 8th to 12:01 January 15th, my time. Results will be posted no later than January 20th, each recipient being given their trophy at the same time as the results are released.

Now that the rules are all done, here are my personal nominations!
Best contributor to Cave Story discussion: X-Calibar
Do I need to elaborate?

Most unexpected return: The real Shane
I think I can safely say that nobody saw that incident coming. Also, apparently his doppelganger The Eternal Darkness is back? It's all rather confusing, but certainly very unexpected.

"Nicest" User: Myself
Defending the title.

Best Self Picture: My Halloween costume.
Dayuuuuuuuum

Nicest User: Polaris
They pretty consistently show a level of kindness and happiness far above that of the vast majority of the other members, and even seems to have trouble saying mean things in general.

Most Promising New Member: Nadojin
This is a new category, replacing Best New Member. It exists to, rather than choose someone who's come here and been good, choose someone who's come here, been good, and seems likely to continue with that level of goodness. Nadojin here has come, been mostly good, but also has brought with him an interesting project that seems less likely than most to fail.

So without further ado, let's get nominating!

Something tells me the moderation wouldn't be too keen on having giant boobs as trophies.

I nominate my Misery cosplay as best self picture because I'm selfish and hey painting yourself white isn't easy.

Polaris: Nicest member/Best New member

ZarroTsu: Most unexpected return (that happened in 2013, right? I don't feel like checking)

"Best" thread I nominate Lavacat or whatever that highheelgamer nonsense was. Because that's all I can think of at the moment.

I'll put more effort into this post later maybe

my nommys
Best contributor to Cave Story Discussion: HaydenStudios
He's the only person I can think of besides X-Calibar who contributes a good deal of discussion to CS topics.

Most Promising New Member: Fatih120
I think there's a lot of room for improvement with Faith! Don't prove me wrong, buddy.
Random-storykeeper
I'm a tad bit confused how I managed to pick Fatih first for this, I definitely think RSK deserves it more.

Best Mod: Cave Story: Rising Earth and Chocolate Sunday
Was going to nominate Sue's Story, but then I remembered Chocolate Sunday existed and I remember really liking that. It's unfortunate we may not get another release. Cave Story: Rising Earth is another mod with great potential that we've seen a lot of good from.

Best Ragequit: The Core
Too good.

"Best" Mod: Retro Story and ms71 Story
metalsonic71 double-whammy! You always make us laugh, buddy, whether or not intentional.

"Best" Thread: The fill-in-the-______ forum game of fun of jest of lark of fun of other things.
I can't help but laugh every time I read this thread.
I might make some more later.

At the beginning of the year I created a text document, and have been putting all the memorable threads and posts in that all year. Here's what I've got:

Best contributor to Cave Story Discussion:
- X-Calibar. X-Calibar is one of the only users these days who still manages to write long and detailed posts giving his two cents on the inner meanings and implications of that which is not explicitly stated in the game despite how much the theories section has been exhausted, and for how long he's been in the thick of it.

- andwhyisit. One of the shining examples of the fact that quality should be favored over quantity when it comes to posting. While his posts aren't as detailed as X-Calibar's, he still always thinks things through and, in my opinion, almost always reaches the most logical and likely conclusion regarding any topic he discusses.

- WoodenRat

Most Promising new Member:
I can nominate anyone who joined in 2013, right?

- Polaris. The day they first posted in the introduction thread, I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of maturity they showed. For as long as they've been here, I've loved Polaris. They're kind, energetic, playful, and one of the most mature users here.

- thomasco2013. This forum has a loathing for the stereotypical immature behavior of twelve-year-olds. Well, let's be honest here: most thirteen-year-olds aren't that much better. But Thomas here sure is. Not that he didn't show some characteristics of newbiness, but in so doing, he had a polite and respectful innocence about him that made him a joy to talk to. I wish more users were like him upon joining.

- ElecMaw. A polite and mature user with some respectable artistic talent. He's been like this ever since he joined.

- EnlightenedOne
- Bombchu Link
- Thatnamelessguy

Best Self-Picture:

Most Unexpected Return:
- ZarroTsu
- The Joker
- Landonpeanut
- SkyeWelse
- Cripplechair

Nicest Member:
- Polaris. Let's just face it here. Polaris is going to completely annihilate the competition in this category. Everyone else is running for second place. Polaris is always kind, slow to anger, and has an almost clean record of being cheerful throughout their whole time being here. I deeply admire the fact that they were accepted by the community almost immediately, but vehemently resisted getting sucked into the machine.

- X-Calibar. Trying to stir up anger in X-Calibar is like trying to reason with highheelgamer. He's always kind and encouraging to members both popular and unpopular, regardless of how polite or impolite they're being. He's always amazed me with his skill to maintain a neutral stance whenever caught in a thread of a new member being chastised, and bring light into any dark situation.

- Tpcool. I've always admired Tpcool's outreaching nature to any member he sees something special in, and not caring one bit about what everyone else thinks about said user. He recognizes immature behavior, yet gives users who practice it an environment on his profile for them to play around on and say twelvish things without getting chewed out, while still talking to them in a kind manner. He never participates in singling another user out, and on occasion even helps to diffuse heated situations without taking sides.

- EnlightenedOne. Quite a calm and polite. Very helpful, funny, and slow to anger.

- trickybilly. A user who doesn't concern himself with any of the conflicts that plague these forums and always posts something positive no matter who he's talking to.

Important update:
A council decision has been made by a few of the members bc fuck dunc
In respect to limiting the amount of submissions, we have decided that any nominations must have at least two backers to qualify for entry. It would be helpful if you could quote the previous nomination if you want to second it, but it's not required.

Following this, GIR earlier wanted to nominate this post for best post. Hayden mentioned it before, so that gives it two backers.

Has nomination volume been a problem in the past? Is it becoming a problem now? Because I suggest that you all stop being pussies and deal with it, because asking for more effort from the community usually has drastic, negative consequences in democratic settings.

Hayden is the main reason for the decision
Because we don't want floods of nominations for things that are only slightly relevant

I honestly think that making the two-nominations system official will, as Fab said, only make things worse. Maybe putting a limit to how many nominations per category would work the best, perhaps two nominations per category for every user.

I would be willing to get behind a compromise something like what Tpcool suggested. If you limited the number of nominations allowed per user, then I might possibly maybe be willing to whittle my nominations down a bit.

I'm not sure that really qualifies as a ragequit, considering he simply copied DualHack's thread. That, along with the fact that he didn't stop being active, and went on to make some more copy-pasta, which then escalated into a desire for more bunny porn (huehuehue), leads me to believe he was joking.

Why would you bother posting a wave of nominations anyway

But yeah the 2-per-category limit sounds like a more sensible idea now that I think about it.

I'd prefer to have it all on a list waiting for me to copy-paste rather than spend several hours looking back through the past year's content and cherry pick the best moments (quite likely overlooking some fun moments in the process), and then periodically remember things here and there throughout the nomination period and have to keep adding, and then after the nomination period is over remember other things that I forgot to nominate. So I prefer to get it all in one post.

To me, the Kanpachis aren't about making it easy to choose a winner, but rather about gathering together all the funny moments from that past year and remembering all the good times. A variety of nominations promotes that spirit of all the meaningful and funny moments of the past year. Having fewer nominations lessens that feeling since it gives you a smaller list of moments to reminisce about.

Does it have to be limited to 2?

If you're going to reminisce about the past then make a year wrap up thread
We don't have enough members here to have decent vote counts for dozens of submissions for each category, and I sure as hell don't want to sift through that many threads to come up with a vote

@second point: see above
