Switch to IPBoard?

Never really been a fan of IPB, and layout-wise, i've always been partial to vB - but it's not my site, and I recommend doing whatever makes life easier for you guys. It's not like it'd be costing me anything, so...

They haven't been that bad as far as I can tell (I think noxid has been cleaning most of them up though), but maybe it's just about time that the forums got an upgrade anyways.

Well I plan to modify the layout to the best of my ability to follow the layout we have now. At the very least I would want to have our current horizontal post headers ported to IPBoard instead of IPBoard's default vertical post headers, since that is the most prominent difference layout-wise.

And yes, I plan to port over our current skins.

EDIT: I'll need to get the software soon so I can port those skins in advance. So are there any last minute objections before I commit myself?

Well there's the IPB defaults, but aside from that I'll be focusing more on porting over the current skins before I worry about creating new ones.

 

Just a suggestion (or question) but will there be a symbol next to your profile like on the users who are online? (like the +s next to your contacts)

Keep in mind that this is just getting the base layout working. I haven't started on porting specific themes yet.

What is this "warn status" I see?

 

I am an admin on an invisionfree board which has a similar thing, except it has plus and minus signs on either side so you can easily warn someone. Only admin/mod accessible, of course.

This is my plan:

1. Purchase and install IPBoard. (This is done btw)

2. Finish building a base theme that all subsequent themes can be built upon. This includes:

a. Rewriting html in the base theme to make changes to the layout without reusing the original html (since that belongs to the owners of vB).
b. Producing css to match.
c. Adding in any common elements across our current themes.
d. Recreating any images that belong to vB themes.​

3. Recreate as many of our current themes as possible using the base theme as a parent. Gameflaws, BluePerl, CS Lite and CS Dark will come first as they are minor edits of each other and are what the base theme would be umm.. "based" on. Then I would do CS ARGGH and then finally the Miraigamer default theme, which is the one I am looking forward to the least. Then again I may leave that last one until after the forums are switched over.

4. Post an announcement and turn off both forums when I have given the forums sufficient warning.

5. Back up forum files and database.

6. Run the converter.

7. Manually copy over user group information, ip bans, and word filters.

8. Remove the contents of the "forum" subfolder.

9. Copy all files from the IPBoard forums to my computer, rename all instances of its current folder to the "forums" folder and then re-upload to the forums folder.

10. Delete original ipb forum's folder.

11. Test and fine tune.

12. Turn forums back on.

Note that 5-12 may take only a few hours, but 2 and 3 may require any number of free weekends to complete.

The vB to IPB converter can copy almost everything except for themes, word filters, ip ban lists, and user permission sets

I assumed when he said everything he meant everything, but if there's anything that we can't copy, now would be a good time to inform us.

 

I would volunteer to do this one myself if I actually knew how, since I'm probably one of the few people still clinging to this old theme.

I am not abandoning the theme. It will be done but since it is the biggest deviation from the proposed base theme it will be left until last. Plus a number of images would need to be recreated since I have no idea which graphics originally came from the vB default themes. So while the first 5 themes could be produced with minor css alterations to the proposed base theme, the miraigamer default on the other hand would be a little more extensive and thus may take longer.

I can't think of anything. Oh and VM's are called profile comments in IPB, but it's the same thing really. There's a link to a chart of what the vB to IPB converter transfers over in the first post. Although I can post it here if needs be:
