I just noticed this, and i may be thinking too literally, but...

you can use the fireball underwater. that doesn't seem to make sense, as the water should put out the fire.

The fireballs are also bouncing, and capable of penetrating enemies should their damage potential be greater than the target's remaining hitpoints.
I don't think that it's simply lobbing out pure fire.

edit: I didn't actualy edit anything, except to add this edit. Don't ask why. :p

I think there are substances that can burn underwater.

Fire can exist underwater. How do you think they have underwater metal cutters and welders?

There's a supply of oxygen behind the flame; the flame being hot enough to evaporate water around it.

Remember that water was available in the mimiga village, and yet the only thing in CS that puts out fire was jellyfish juice. I'm pretty sure Santa made the fireball himself in that case.

Well, judging by your logic, then it would also mean that the Fireball should burn down the whole of Grasstown. And why would Santa give him the Fireball if he knows it will burn down Grasstown?

Well by thinking too literally,

Wouldn't the bubbler be destroyed in the fire in King's Hall even before you could take it out? Or wouldn't the bubble formula be messed up? DOTIESZ...

Technology in Cave Story's world is pretty advanced and of good quality, you would think they would have learnt how to protect a weapon against heat considering the amout of heat the spur would generate.

Fireball probably doesn't use actual fire since fire doesn't bounce and the "fireballs" do not look like they are made of fire.

Jellys probably stop fires before they get out of control since the entire cave is an ecosystem.

It is probably a chemical fire used in the fireplace, last time I checked water didn't work on those and I don't see where Mimigas could obtain wood from.

All questions are now answered.

The world of Cave Story is a world of both magic and advanced technology. You notice that in the technology department since all of the non-missile-based weapons are energy-based weapons and that quote actually exists.

I'd have to agree that the charcoal means wood, my bad. Maybe there is a chemical in the wood.

That's not thinking 'too literally,' that's making too many assumptions on facts that aren't given or atleast implied in-game. ;P
