I put together this small video the other day, and thought it might be worth sharing here too; for anyone who uses any games, RPGmaker or not, that still use MIDI that doesn't have a built-in emulation :

CoolSoft released a program called VirtualMIDISynth, that allows any new Windows computer (Yes, even 8) to use soundfonts instead of the default Microsoft Synth. Before now, you'd need a soundcard like an Audigy 2 to switch soundfonts... Now anyone can do it!

RPGmaker just doesn't feel the same to me without it!
I made this video because I hadn't seen it mentioned in the RPGmaker community...

You can get the program here :
http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth

As for the soundfonts :
A bunch are linked on that page.

Here are some more :
http://woolyss.com/chipmusic-soundfonts.php
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=351893

The Musical Box 2.1 soundfont is currently down, replaced by the newer version called Evanessence... It doesn't always sound as good for RPGmaker midis, but if you want it, see if the creator will give permission to reupload it for our purposes. Or beg me to ask @_@ ...

Some soundfonts may be compressed in Sfark or Sfpack formats...
A quick google should find those small programs.

I have only had ONE issue that I will mention while using this : While I'm 99% sure it is unrelated, when using RPGmaker in fullscreen, sometimes all the instruments are piano. It works fine windowed, so I am able to work around it. I do not believe it is this program that causes this issue, because it didn't go away when I uninstalled. I just got this Windows 7 system recently, so I haven't been able to pinpoint the issue.

I briefly reviewed a couple of terrible RPG maker RPGs over here. To be frank, I openly look down upon any RPG maker game using the default RTP in such a manner that Chrono trigger looks like a PS3 game by comparison. Or if its opening dialog is riddled with typos.

Hadn't played any of those games except Terraria briefly...

@Nexus
- Looks like all the art is taken from various sources, still nice work mashing them up and fooling me briefly that they were all from the same game~
To put it as lightly and politely as I could, your grammar is an abysmal travesty of the worst kind
Well, to be fair : "This is actually my first english-languaged game, so do mind me if there are some spelling mistakes. I don't think that they are hurting the game much though."
So I expect the worst...

I'd have to play it to judge it though...

@Zendir
p148778-0-zendir4.png
... hummm, scrolling through the screenshots; I am not expecting too much.

@Crysalis
For some reason I thought this was "Crystalis"... Yeah this game appears to be a game example for the maker version. Basically promoted for what you can do with the engine, rather than standing on its own merit. So I wouldn't expect that much from that one either...

But, maybe I'll check them out to see if you're being overly harsh or right on target~

If you want a game that should be worth reviewing :
I remember FEY called for feedback not too long ago.

I think it has nice potential.

As for a game that uses the default RTP and does a decent job with it... I played a game recently called : Vagabond. That one might be worth checking out, though it's not a small task to see it to the end. That would have been a pretty nice choice to replace Crysalis with, as an RTP example game.

I've started a dangerous blanket posting competition, and unfortunately, innocent threads are getting caught in the crosswinking. I'm sorry to hoodwink this perfectly good thread, but I want you to know, whatever happens here...
I hoodwink you all so much.

In the end, the hoodwinking will be for the benefit of all.

OLD POST :
Did you mean : Winkle Hood

p148787-0-beamfli3.jpg

Presenting the story of Rip Von Winkle's Hood.

W-w--w-we in the hood! zzzz

Okay, Let's see...
I'm trying to get into RPGmaker VX Ace and make something since I bought it earlier this year, currently working on some resources for their RPGmaker DS pack...

Alternatively I could work on CS stuff, and try to finish something... but, really, who wants that?

NEW POST :

Been a while since I posted any new RPGmaker games. Let's see what's worth playing!

....
Here's the first one I'll mention, I just finished it, and felt a little emotional charring.
A short mystery called "Happy Birthday".
logo.png

Highly recommended 8/10

http://rpgmaker.net/games/4839/
(You'll need the VX Ace RTP if you don't have it probably)

....
Second here's one I've been anticipating for years.
Fey. It appears. It. Is. Completed!!!

p148787-2-themysteryofthebighole.png

I haven't gotten to playing it yet, but this game looks easily to be of commercial quality.
I'm a little dubious on its emotional impact, but the game should play like a dark Secret of Mana or Evermore? Anyway, it's worth your time to check out, and I doubt it will disappoint.
Highly anticipated ??/10

(Uses RPGmaker 2003)

....
I played 4 other games worth mentioning :
7.8/10
p148787-3-boxes.png

Think Outside The Box - A short puzzle game, that is pretty amusing about Box people. Witty dialogue, and some unfortunante situations for Clowns. xD A bit cumbersome though, but a good little game. Aimed at a young audience probably.
http://rpgmaker.net/games/4739/

7.5/10
p148787-4-child3.png

Child's Light - This game is another short detective mystery game... but with very JARRING artwork. It grows on you though. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I don't recommend multiple playthroughs, as there are some frustrating bugs or missing content. Still it's playable to the end. Not aimed at a young audience...
http://rpgmaker.net/games/4471/

7/10
p148787-5-scree2.png

Very Pink Game+ - Basically a Short Pink Fetch quest for young girls? The simplisitic graphics are cute.

7/10
p148787-6-veryretrouvaille5.png

Very Retrouvaille - A more advanced short fetch quest game, with some great cute graphics; story is still aimed at young girls I think? Slight anthropomorphs in this one... Maybe like a short story from Animal Crossing?

Over 30 more to check out!
