My top 5 Freeware games?

Well... I haven't played 5, yet... But when I have, I'll list them.

DoubleThink said:
Within a Deep Forest: Surprised nobody mentioned this yet... well-designed and challenging platforming with really nice ambient music. You play as a bouncing ball, adding a whole other mechanic to manage.
As much as I'd like to play this, this darn Trend Micro Internet Security I got a month ago (The Norton subscription expired...) won't let me, calling it a "Generic Trojan Horse"... More like a false alarm from an overprotective piece of *Insert cussword of choice here*!

And this is only the beginning...
DoubleThink said:
La-Mulana: Amazingly well-designed, oozing genuine style both macabre and oldschool, filled with a dark story and genuinely challenging riddles and puzzles the likes of which I've never seen before.
I just started on this last night, & didn't get far, but things will start to change soon... Now that I've figured out how to save...
(*Sings to the U.N. Owen Was Her theme* Noobish, noobish, I, am so noobish...)

OMG I realised I don't really love many games.

Freewares :

Cave Story
Stick Soldiers, 1 better than 2 in some way
Die, Die, Galaxy XD
3 in Three + At the Carnival + The Fool's Errand (I won't spend money online to get The Fool and His Money)
Acidbomb (not really)
Clockwiser (not really)

Online :

Idiot Test series
Button Hunt series
Seven Deadly Sins
Necronomicon
Dark Cut Series + Light Cut :o

Commercial :

Series :

Diablo
Tony Hawk's
Megaman (emulator!! >=D)
The Sims (not really)
Civilization (maybe) + Alpha Centauri - Colonization (although Colonization is factually a better game)

Singles :

Re-Volt
Space Rangers 2
Lego Racers 1
Unreal Tournament
Monkey Island 4

Overall

  1. I guess..... Re-volt!!! Never gets old, even when you've won thousand times with several different cars.
  2. Cave Story :D Elaboration is unnecessary.
  3. Space Rangers 2!!! And I don't need to try SR1 because nobody seemed to be in favour of it compared to its sequel!!!!
  4. Diablo 2. Don't really need to be online, but once you tried it online, there's no fun in playing offline. Which sucks.
  5. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Series!!! Awesomely well-balanced where there is no disappointing THPS game up to 4. I didn't bother buying after that since a new one is published every half a year and that sounds sucky. One of the games that can get me mad.

Oh man this game is/was awesome. I used to play it so much and still do sometimes... at least after my really old really REALLY shitty computer (it crashed regularly trying to run Word) was replaced and I could finally play the damn thing :o

I thought LR2 was okay, although the whole "If you lost your car you have to run" thing was too easy to abuse. There was only minimal boost and no warps, so you had to make sure your racing line was good. The car control was also a bit sticker, but I liked the whole free-roaming aspect.
Anyways, let us combine hopes for LR3 in the meantime :3

I hope there is Re-volt 2. And not RC Revenge or anything. RE. -. VOLT. 2. Or maybe it's just one of those games that pwn best without sequels.

....which reminds me of this game. If you haven't played it before, you must do it now. But only once is necessary.

What the heck?! Don't say anything bad about RC Revenge or I will kill you. RC Revenge is the best old school racing game for the PS.
Tell me what's bad about RC Revenge?

EDIT: Went to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re-Volt. Amazing that Re-Volt. It seems another version of RC Revenge and it is the same publisher "Acclaim".

EDIT2: Something wrong with this wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RC_Revenge_Pro . Read the last two sentences. (It is very incomplete article)

It's..... great. The tracks, the tracks and the unlock system, the not getting bored even though it's damn easy to win and just a few tracks you have there.

It's..... very incomplete. 13 tracks, not much shortcuts to explore (unlike lego racer 1 which's got one in every race except one), atleast3rd requirement (just like Ignition?) that narrows the room for more exploration, but the fact that you can win Platinum Cup with XL is quite amusing. Just that this atleastpodium thingy makes it always luck-based on the last race. And since I lost the CD, I dun hav music, but I still had won 100 cups since.

1. Cave Story - Would I be here if it were anything else? Probably not.
2. Iji - Rocks my socks, but Cave Story already had my soul.
4. A game with a Kitty - Why you guys like #2 better? Does it even have a kitty? I didn't see one.
3. Any finished "Full size" CS Mod - Because mods are winsome. But scarce.
5. La-Mulana - Okay, I'll be honest, I haven't actually played this, but it looks good, and DC has like 80 videos for it. It's either this or IWBTG for #5 as "Games I haven't played but look like I would enjoy greatly if I did".

1. Zelda Classic http://www.purezc.com/-active community http://www.zeldaclassic.com/-another active community, plus it has the 2.10 engine-it's the original loz engine, but now improved, ever expanding, some betas even mimic Gamboy abilities. Plus there's an active community that's has about 16 pages worth of quests made for it. Very awesome, and my first good experience with freeware games.

2. CaveStory-pure awesomeness, made me remember the old nes days for sheer difficulty and awesome secrets.

3. Iji http://remar.se/daniel/iji.php- holy crap, this completely revised my opinion of GameMaker, it turns out you CAN make some seriously awesome stuff with it.

4. La Mulana http://db.tigsource.com/games/la-mulana-(sorry, can't remember the original site, lemme know if this one works)-Old School difficulty in it's prime, with equally Old School graphics. May cause you to commit suicide due to some of it's absolutely evil puzzles, though, damnit, that thing is eeeeevvvviiiilllll. EVIL! But still awesome.

5. Another Metroid 2 remake http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/- Metroid II remade with incredible graphics and awesome design. Also made with Game Maker, seriously, in the right hands, you can make some really good stuff, some just as good as Cave story.

I completely agree. Loved that game although I sucked at it and never managed to finish it.

I hate making top lists and putting numbers on everything so I'll just give a few recommendations on excellent freeware stuff.

When it comes to platformers, there's always:
p48899-0-atowerofheavenbygodsavant.png

Tower of God
Quite challenging and short Gameboy-ish game where new rules are continously added.

p48899-1-ausablepromoscreenshot.jpg

Au Sable
An atmospherical horror run-n-gun with a very interesting control scheme.

p48899-2-ivory4.gif

Ivory Springs and other Konjak games
Old-school fun and in overall a good indie-developer

Other games:
p48899-3-tmajesty3a.png

(I Fell in Love With) The Majesty of Colors
Lovely and atmospherical point-and-click.

p48899-4-todayidie300.jpg

Today I Die
Stunning game that plays with poetry.

p48899-5-theendlessforest.jpg

The Endless Forest
You play as a deer. You interact with other players through gestures. Unfortunately doesn't work too well on my computer.

p48899-6-mondo.png

Mondo Medicals and everything by Cactus
Whilst you were reading this post, Cactus made 7 new games.

p48899-7-missyourbus.jpg

Edmund
Noir-ish game about a rapist.

p48899-8-aw2z.png

I'm not a Bad Person really, I just have low self-esteem
A short take on the Little Red Ridinghood.

I can also recommend the previously mentioned Karoshi 2.0, Knytt Stories, Knytt. Cave Story is a no-brainer.
