Mimish! Creating a language for the Mimigas...

I think this has grown enough to deserve a thread of its own, so that the Movie Script thread may be devoted just to plot discussions and arguments.

And besides, it's something that could become useful even outside of the movie script.

So... the idea is to create the language of the Mimigas! Andwhyisit has made admirable progress already in deciding what the symbols should represent, but discussions about grammar, the appearance of the symbols, and anything else related to the topic at hand are certainly welcome!

The Mimiga counting system is {Start}, {One}, {Two}, {Three}, {Four}, [alt]{One}, [alt]{Two}, [alt]{Three}, [alt]{Four}, {One}{One}, {One}{Two}, etc. which was basically 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,11,12.. since Mimiga have a base of 8 in their counting system due to only having 8 fingers (humans have a base of 10, so our number 21 is their number 25). The first set of numbers is based on the left hand and the other on the right. {Start} is only used in the number 0 and does not show up in any other number since 10 is replaced by the number 8, this can cause confusion when comparing to the human numbering system.

I think we need a {Name} symbol. By itself it would just mean "name", but with other symbols following it, it would be a name. Good idea? Bad idea?

For anyone new to this:
The Mimish symbols/letters each have a meaning. These symbols and meanings are joined together to create words.

For example:
{Vessel}[on]{Water} is a word for "boat".

There are also controllers that alter the nature of a symbol.

For example:
[alt]{Soft} is a word for "hard".

 

Here's the first sample of the actual symbols. After I get more of these into my computer, I'll post them here. Meanwhile, feel free to come up with your own symbols.

Um... we're trying to create a brand-new language, not extend one created by Richard Adams. Not to mention that his language was tailored for rabbits, while this is for humanoids.

In appearance, yes, but not in culture. And I'd say culture is probably a more important consideration than appearance when creating a language.

Culture? What does that have to do with writing? Well, okay: The Mimigas live on a floating island, where they are unnoticed by the Surface Dwellers. We haven't seen any signs of Mimiga culture, no statues, theatres, nothing. The only thing that might be written in Mimish are those signs we encouter throughout the game.

 

Culture will influence language. Taking the example of Watership Down: as marcoaslak said, "silflay" means "go to the surface and eat". This is a product of the rabbits' "culture". Only a species that lives underground yet eats on the surface would have such a word. Therefore, Richard Adams's rabbit language is unsuitable for the Mimigas.
