Well, yes and no. At a core level the engine itself would still be there - to handle the scripts, the data management, and collisions (It'll have to be 2.5D, which will allow me to keep the rectangular hitbox model)
What I'll have to outsource is basically all the rendering itself. I've actually toyed with the idea in the past - using a DLL to give me alpha-blending for my pixels for example - but after I got thinking about it, i figured if I'm going to use a DLL for graphics, why not go the whole 9 yards and take it straight to 3D? The basic principle is still the same, just different libraries and a bit more extraneous functions for calculating stuff using floating point based on the integer system in game.

But you can't simply outsource the rendering, dear noxid! The existence of a superficial zed axis in most pseudo threedy games allows the use of believable parallax - in order to allow total immersion, you will have to add, like, a dword to each npc's, tile's, and bullet's ram-carry data. This atrocious waste of memory is sure to cause leaks and harm poor little children in africa! WHAT WILL YOU DO TO STOP IT!?

Fear not dear Lace, for I have much experience with memory leaks. Why, as far as I can recall (and GIR should be able to attest to this), every single major hack I've done has had a memory leak at one point or another. As long as I know it exists, I should be able to patch anything up.

As for the waste of memory, a DWORD is only 4 bytes, and if I just resorted the existing NPC memory that's only cut the max # entities down from 0x200 to 0x1F4, by my calculations.

Holy shit, you've done it again.
I have a few questions though:
1) Will you change the music format again or stick with pxtone?
2) Do you have plans to make a new editor for yourslef?
3) Is the system of coordinates going to be the same?
4) Aren't they completely remaking Cave Story from the ground up? You probably don't have to, but you probably wouldn't encounter many legal issues if your editing a freeware engine still.
5) Is there any way to improve over 3D? You could do better than Cave Story 3Ds and set the example for the next potential remake.

I think this should be able to answer your questions:

I must extend mad props to Volley for being completely awesome and making me that 3D model on such short notice. Wouldn't have been nearly as good an april fool's day without it.

Looking back the 3d does seem like it wouldn't be possible. I only believed you because of your skills and that you sounded confident. But now our trust has been broken and I don't know if I can- ohh! Shiny!
What were we talking about?

I actually *am* going to add rain to a scene late in the game >.>
It will be different though.

And, technically speaking it's not impossible to outsource the rendering, I think, but it would be a lot more work than I made it out to be. As well, I am actually not really partial to 3D graphics in the first place. Oh, and also the fact that I don't actually know how to do it...

Ahhh... priceless noxid x'D well played, well played!

To be honest, i didn't actually model the textures, i just painted them on afterword, and reduced the image size purposely to hide the flaws.

It was definitely a fun little challenge x'D

The screenshots have convinced me to at least try it... I'll tell ya what I think about it after I play for a bit, but now (as I'm typing this) I have to leave.
