Nope, just upload a gif file when you go to change your avatar. Just make sure it's under the file size limit (which I don't remember off the top of my head) and under 100x100 pixels.

Reading this thread, I would suggest that users under, say, 100 posts not request to be drawn.
It sounds prickish and elitist, but it's only because there are a lot of you and Woodenrat's drawings take a while and are a lot of work for him.
I'm not telling what to do, but I think it would be best if you waited your turn, as it was, for woodenrat's sanity.
