I decided to create this partially to see if it can be done, partially to experiment, and partially to make use of an otherwise unused set of commands.
My belief that this was intended in the original stems from a snippet in ArmsItem.tsc:

Code:
#6002
<PRI<EVE7002<MPJ7002<MSGNo data for this floor.<NOD<CLR<END

...

#7002
<MLP<END

For those of you familliar with TSC, you'll notice an <EVE making the rest of the script essentially dummied out; useless.

Basically, this is a super-streamlined version of something that could be done with a convoluted mess of normal flags - Only allowing SOME areas to be mapped.

I hope it adds a little dynamic to the original.

Four points:

1.) This is finished and final.
2.) It's a VERY small tweak to impliment what I believe was an intention in the original; one that was aborted due to time constraints.
3.) This is not F.U.C.K.
4.) See the readme for details.

Lastly, no. Hell is not mapped.
Pressing 'W' while the map system is equipped will display the map, providing the correct terminal is activated for the current area.

So only certain maps work?

Downloads...

AH! Only very few maps have data! That's cool! You actually have to WORK to get the maps.

I'm assuming that there are terminals that "download" the maps, or set flags allowing for the maps to be accessed?

Good edit! How long did it take you?

Yeah, it struck me as funny that you would have a map of the ENTIRE island, even areas you've never seen before.
And I highly doubt the creator of the map system had been to hell, so. Yeah.

As for the time it took...
Minimal.
Just a half-dozen entities and a little script.
The real challenge was handled by Lace who came up with the assembly needed to make the map system work with the W key.

Which brings me to a second point - This would make an interesting base for a mod in that pressing W now runs event #0003 instead of exclusively calling the map. ;D

Lace just loves to call script events in assembly (it's why he looked up how to make it so you're not invulnerable to everything during a script event).

And remember lace, I gave you the offset for what happens when you press the W key :(

...does that mean in a way I helped in this project too?

I'm just curious, but is it easy/notsuperincrediblyhard to make it so that you can bring up your item screen during a <KEY?

Hmmm...
ExplorerStory is in a RAR file.
Are you using WinRar?
If not, it wouldn't be too much trouble for me to upload a ZIP version.

If ya are using WinRar, try redownloading - might've gotten corrupted.

I tried to open it again, and it just kept on asking me if I wanted to open it everytime I clicked 'Open'.
I'm usually able to open a RAR file, so I don't know what's wrong then.
