I don't know if I'm allowed to do this but whatever...

It's time to see who can make the best boss track in...

The CSTSF Boss Music Competition!

The task? Make the best ORIGINAL ORG composition for a boss fight! The winner will be decided by... well somebody.
Anyone can enter, but only one will win!
Rules:
  • Original pieces only! No remixes, no transcriptions.
  • It has to be a BRAND NEW piece made within the time of the competition's start. HOWEVER, remixing or reworking a pre-existing track of your own creation is acceptable, as long as you include a copy of the original which shows significant change to the piece.
  • Only ORG, and you can't use alternative percussion. The ORG would have to be usable with an otherwise unedited version of Cave Story.
  • It can be as long as you want. Just don't over do it!
Participants:
  • TPcool
  • Random-storykeeper
  • Safusaka
  • Jpzarde
  • TheVinylCheese
  • Takeshi64
  • ColdCallerloppy
  • Xemous
  • hate9
  • DoubleThink
  • GBAura

Entries:

Thanks to hate9 for compiling this video for the entries!

Link to the video here.

Deadlines:
All entries must be turned in by June 27th, 2015.

A video/compilation will be made by hate9 and completed within five days of the deadline. Voting will take place for three full days after the video is posted, utilizing a poll, before the winner is decided!

Finalists:
  • TheVinylCheese
  • Safusaka

The Winner: TheVinylCheese's "Catastrophe"

I will place a download link for the winner's ORG in my signature (best prize ever, right?).

6/27: Time's up! All participants who did not meet the deadline are disqualified. The final works are in and hate9 will create his video compilation within three days. Voting will start with or without the compilation on June 30th.

6/30: Part One of the Voting Procedure will start today! On July 4th, we will begin Part Two. The voting is being done in parts to narrow down the choices to one final contestant.

7/6: Sorry about the delay! My internet went down. Round two starts today! Good luck to our semi-finalists!
This time, only the top three will earn a place in the final round of voting!
7/7: Alright, there were some voting issues, and I'm changing how the vote works anyway. We are down to our two finalists: Safusaka and TheVinylCheese! Good luck to you both! The winner will be announced at the end of the week!

7/11: And the winner is TheVinylCheese! Congrats!

Am I allowed to use a piece I made a while ago but which no one really noticed?

(You may slap me for this.)

Meh I've never really made a boss theme before, but this'll be an interesting challenge. Consider me in as a participant.

I'm guessing by "new" piece the Org has to have been made within the scope of the competition. But am I allowed to take a motif I made a while back and turn it into a new piece for this competition?

Melody tracks: All of the melody track instruments (Wave-00 to Wave-99) work in Cave Story.
Drum tracks: See org210x.zip -> drums.htm -> section "Cave Story":

I'm using OrgMaker 2.1.0x English to compose an ORG file that I will insert into a Cave Story mod. What drums should I use?

Use these drums

Track Q: Bass01
Track W: Snare01
Track E: HiClose
Track R: HiOpen
Track T: Tom01
Track Y: Per01
Track U: Bass01 (and Track U must remain empty)
Track I: Bass01 (and Track I must remain empty)

*slap*

No, sorry. If you remix it and rework it, then yes.

(Also, and here's the thing, if nobody noticed it and if you hadn't said anything, you could have used it without anyone really noticing).

Yeah, sure, why not. Remixing and reworking old piece of your own is fine.

Well, derp.

(I doubt I could have gotten away with it, though, because it was my last post in the ORG music thread.)

Oh well...

I'd like to join please. Does the song need to have a certain tone to it or just be a boss song, period?

Just a boss song. As long as it works for a boss.

EDIT:

Also, VERY NICE Mr. Vinyl. I can't wait to see what else people will bring to the challenge!

Alright then, I think ten participants is enough. Now we need judges.

Community voting for the entries will begin on that day.

On July 1st, 2015, the judges will review the ORGs and the community's opinion before making their own decision as to the winner.

Good luck!
What impact will community voting have in this competition? The judges will just look at it and see one opinion as a whole and then base it against their own personal choices, it seems. But wouldn't the judges be a partial representation of the community, anyways? It almost doesn't make sense to limit the number of participants. If there's too many, why not just make it purely judged by the community? Or are you planning to have a "judges panel" winner and "community voted" winner?
