Something you don't seem to understand. I didn't just change this for no reason, all of this was discussed between andwhyisit, SkyeWelse, and S. P. Gardebiter and myself before I did it.

I wasn't there.
My harddrive crashed about a week ago.

Yes, hacking means screwing with the machine code.
modding is all that wimpy stuff with maps and sprites.
Any Idiot can mod, not everyone can hack.

I have to agree to this somehow.

The only editors we have to use are editors which were created through hacking the game.

Yes that's correct, but the game was hacked by their creators and not you.

Brickman said:
Or at least through your definition of hacking, which is looking through the code and changing it/doing stuff with it. So every cave story mod, even one that just changes dialogue, is a hack.

No, because the dialogue is raw data, now don't point at me with your fingers and say: "BUT EDITING RAW DATA IS HACKING TOO." No it isn't because:

1. You are using an editor. (Not a hex editor though)
2. Hacking is when you figure out the file format by yourself without using FAQ's.
3. Hacking is when you understand some of Cave Story's assembly code.

And the most important:

4. Hacking is when someone calls you a hacker.

Note the "Editing/Hacking" part. Even if you don't classify it as "Hacking", it is still "Editing". Note the "Rom" part (I am fairly sure you already know what that means). Now altogether as "Rom Editing/Hacking" that means editing or hacking any bloody file on your computer, whether it be cave story files or a JPEG file, a ms word doc, ANYTHING!!

Wrong. I can hack perfectly fine without any understanding of assembly code. A hex editor is all I need for most things.

Move your discussions to either the mod or hack forum, duh. Deleting this post doing that.

Hacking does not usually involve assembly at all. It's when you figure out the file format and/or use that information to edit the file.

Most importantly: You can't mod a game without hacking it.

I know what editing means, I never said that your definition is actually wrong.
But hacking doesn't mean editing.

It's not wrong.
Hacking is not all about editing raw data. Hacking doesn't even mean you are editing files.
And remember that you're not a hacker only because you call yourself so.
I do think though, that you're a bit of a hacker.

That's not correct :)
Hacking is much more than wimpy file editing or using map editors.
The scripting is a joke when you compare it to assembly.
Modding is much more than hacking, hacking is the real hard stuff.
And hacking normally indeed does involve assembly, not the other way round.

Hacking does not need to involve assembly. Editing your save file is hacking, for example. Okay, I could allow that using a game-save editor to do it may not be hacking, but editing your saved game with a hex editor is certainly hacking.

Hacking is not modding, as well as it isn't synonymous for editing, that's totally wrong.

Editing your savefile isn't even modding as well as it's not hacking.
Modding = Modifying a game
Hacking = Changing the assembly code or figuring out how something works

Does it even matter? It's been renamed to the "Hacking and Modding" forum. It's been used for help with both hacking and modding. The forum the finished products go to contains both hacks and mods. No point arguing over semantics that aren't even in play.

7. Offtopic can be tolerated as long as it follows the flow of conversation, if it doesn't get out of control and goes back ontopic at the request of the thread starter, moderator, or admin.

Even if you are in fact the thread starter, I personally think this needs to be clarified.

This was never meant as a discussion thread but as an announcement thread. It should have been closed ages ago.

Tell me when you want the thread back up.

Thread closed.
