Okay, got an update for you.

---

First off, Quote.

quoteWIP2.png

A lot of changes here. Compare the two pictures to see.

Most notably, I made his arms shorter, made a simple model of the booster, changed the belt stuff and added pockets and a real zipper...thing. Also tweaked his scarf and shoes and slimmed him down a bit. Also, new hands.

---

Then Curly.

curlyWIP2.png

Not as many changes here, but I made her head taller, eyes smaller, boobs...well...less defined, gave her legs, made her arms a tiny bit thicker...

What was wrong about her colors? I will fix that asap.

---

And here's a new one. Balrog. Very simple model so far. Haven't decided on how to shade him yet either, so the current shader might be temporary.

---

So... Give me all you've got. Again.

Next up will perhaps be Sue.

Balrog looks not too surprisingly like one of those over sized preschool legos with the faces on them. I know there's not much to go by, but try rounding off some of the edges and giving him a more robotic texture. Or just make him shinier. :p

Nice job Volant! I'm pretty impressed with your work. I definitely think you should do something with these. I'm an animator/modeler as well, or at least in the beginning stages. I've not done too much with humans, but I think you've done an admirable job putting these together. I use Maya mostly, but I'm also learning Blender on the side.

I like your style and prefer the models as they are rather than making them more chibi-styled as they still look similar to the original Pixel character design. Good luck with your project! It'll be exciting to see how it turns out. Let me know if you need any assistance getting it animated or something to that effect. Most of my animation/modeling work so far is uploaded at my gallery at miraigamer.net. I literally began to learn 3D stuff about a semester ago.

Also, someone sent me a link to these low-poly CS models recently as well that might be interesting to check out.

There was one of Misery as well, but I believe the artist deleted his post.

Edit: Oh right, criticism. Well, not much here except maybe the skin-tone for Quote and Curly should be a little more flesh colored. Wasn't sure if you were leaving it as a Lambert shader or if that was done. As for Balrog, perhaps a Blinn that has very low reflectivity and specular.

Everything is good on Curly apart from facial structure and expression (basically her face needs some work). Curly's face seems weird.

Agreein', Curly's cheeks are too large and seem to kind of push in to her nose.
Balrog looks kinda flat, maybe you could make his eyes more protuberant?
Just pointing out what seems off, these are very nice otherwise. :p

Agree with that. Also, Balrog's face stripes are bit off. See here.
What's wrong with Curly's clothes? I think the color is about right.

They are not red. Her shirt is bright pink, and her pants are a darker purpley colour:

Wow, Volant, liking the new pics! Its definitely an improvement over the previous models and I also like how you've modeled Balrog. The only thing I would point out is that he looks a little small (his feet maybe too tall. I'm not sure to be honest.)

Oh PLEASE model her next! (I'm such a fanboy when it comes to her. :) )

No! Mimiga Sue is much cuter! But...meh, its up to Volant to decide.

Out of curiosity. Why Malco?

Screw cuter. Power's the key.

Why? Because a) he's just a minor NPC, and b) he should be fairly easy to create.

Oh, nice to see another 3D person. Those low poly models are very nice. Look just like the sprites, only in 3D.

And about the skin shader.. It's pretty much as I intended it to be. It depends a lot on the lighting, though, but remember, in the game, both Quote and Curly are pretty much white. I tried to copy that.

And Balrog is hard to make. The base model is simple, but creating the proper feeling so that you KNOW it's Balrog from Cave Story... That's hard. Need to work on that.

About other issues brought up:

Curly's face: Working on it.

Curly's clothes: I "stole" the colors from the sprites now, so it should be accurate enough. You'll see in the next update.

Air tank:
How would it look? Is it any more than just the bubble?

Balrog's face stripes:
I'll tweak them a little. Need to work more on him overall as well.

EDIT: OH HELLO PAGE 4, NICE TO MEET YOU. Will reply to comments here shortly.

I just found out that one of the reasons why he looks so small is that his feet are too big. At least I think so. Experimenting with that at the moment. The size thing.

Which Sue? There are three of them
Good question...

Most likely the mimiga version first, since I wanted to make a mimiga. Then the Crystal Sue, and at last (if I ever come this far), human Sue. I want to make as many of the characters as possible, but I wonder how long I can keep it up.

Malco might be interesting too. As a quickie. Will try.

The 'crystal' version is called 'busty enraged Sue' btw.
You can tell that Jacob invented the name. :p

The name we used was "frenzied sue" or something along those lines.
