In most programming languages, the % sign, when used for equating things, means the remainder of. For example, x % y is equal to the remainder of x divided by y. So 15 % 5 would be 0, but 17 % 5 would equal 2, because you get a remainder of 2 if you try to divide 17 by 5 while trying to keep it to integers.
