Cave Story + without a doubt. Has more features, and last I recalled the wiiware version is full of bugs that haven't been fixed for quite a long time.

It's probably still out there, but the wii store ends next year.

Cave Story+ if you want to go with a beginning
but if you look for something fresh, try Cave Story 3D.

Not to mention CS+ is literally the Wiiware port, but on PC. You're not missing much if you pick that.

The switch version is the best, but it goes for 20-30 dollars, and you have to have a switch.

Yeah, the best commercial release of CS is the Switch version, without a doubt.

as you know cave story has been re-released many times, but what are the versions you would and would not recommend to a new player? why and why not? (maybe take price, gameplay, features, and the experience from that version into consideration)

I thought we had this thread like 2 months ago?

In any case:

Worst is Wiiware because upscaled graphics somehow manages to look WORSE than the original, and the soundtrack was butchered from a decent chiptune set, to a droned out badly mixed, and underimpressive OST that only managed to have one justifyable decent track (moonsong).

Best is CSE2 because 60FPS (togglable), Widescreen (also togglable), Not shitty text alpha blending, works on literally almost anything because self-compilable, and is super easy to modify to match how you want to play the game. (I don't think you can drag and drop OSTs from other versions of the game, at least not yet but I can't imagine it being hard to set up since we have freeware compatible .dll source code for that)

switch version or the original freeware. if you don't have a switch but want more stuff than the freeware, go with cave story+ on steam. it's not as good, but it's good enough.
