And, I'll just be clearing away all of this past me stuff, because you know, past me was stupid!

Okay, a little update on the progress of this game and a summary for those who are new to this:
I've been working on this project since December of 2012, with a small team (still growing) who helps me develop it in the process. We have nothing playable yet, but currently our team has some morale issues *cough, cough* member corruption which will be dealt with immediately *cough* so there's still that to deal with.
As for the game itself, it's nothing even remotely new on these forums, and yes, it's been done to death before, and yes, the project cancellation rate is like at around 96%, but I'm not quitting, that's for sure.
The in-work name for the game itself, is
Cave Story 2: Beneath the Surface, but don't go googling that name or anything, you'll get basically nothing.
It is a direct sequel to the original game, taking place right after the events of the first game.
Little screenshot from a while ago, and once porting to GameMaker Studio is complete, more will (hopefully) be available.

As of currently, the game is in canon with JonSpider's Jenn's Journey, and while the games don't reference each other much, there's still in the same timeline, so there's that.
If anyone is curious on plot so far, I wrote a prequel here, and to be honest, it's nothing special, but I hope you enjoy it.

Engine is currently still really early in build, but you can get the most updated version here.

It's not much so far, especially considering my budget is nothing and I'm the only one on the team actually working on this project, I can honestly say this project WILL take a long time. A very long time. But with enough support, (All I need is positive feedback) I can get this done. I'm not revealing anything here, but you can just check the website for any updates.
Anyway, thanks to anyone who checks this post, I really appreciate it!

Some basic info on the game:
- It's not a mod, so it features an entirely new engine with extremely similar physics
- It's being developed in GameMaker (not Studio anymore) and yes, there are much better ways to make a game out there, but frankly, it's cheap and gets the job done

Staff include: Myself, SableArc, MrLog, thecore (unfortunately, because back when I hired him I didn't know his true identity), Hate9, Pomfy and so far that's it.

The Dawn of a new Adventure...
(For the record, I'm just introducing some of the plot here, so this project is NOT simple written fanfiction)​
The Doctor's untimely demise occurs.
His body, shattered and reduced to nothing.
His conscience, without a vessel.
The Demon Crown, now destroyed and powerless.
But what of his creation?
The Red Crystal.
What became of this corrupt, lethal artifact that the Doctor himself had created?
Perhaps...
Among all the destruction, the loss, the chaos,​
It survived.
Quote, Curly and Balrog, unaware of this possibility, revisit the island to investigate a suspicious activity, landing on the *Summit* of the island, an area located above the *Balcony*. The door to the *Last Cave* is locked, and so is the door to the prefab building.
The only way forward is through the throne room.
After a thorough check,
Nothing.
Finally, at the top of the Island's tower, exists *Black Space*. The battle last stand of the Doctor.
Quote and Curly feel a strange sensation as they enter this mysterious, dark chamber.
Flick
A spark, an ever-so small noise. Barely audible by normal humans, the sound was hidden among silence.​
Suddenly, a large storm of red energy explodes from the corner of the room, knocking Quote and Curly back. The red energy shoots around the chamber, until it materializes into a sole shape, surrounded by its own red aura. The energy of the red flower.​
The shape of a crystal.
"My...hatred...will not...cease until....you....die!"​
About the game itself:
And that's all for now folks!​
Well, at least in terms of plot. Basically, this sentient crystal (It shouldn't take long to figure out who's controlling it) strands the three, heroes, Quote, Curly and Balrog on a world distantly familiar to them.​
The Surface.​
Yes, the game takes place (almost) entirely on and beneath the Surface world mentioned so many times in the first game.​
It is here in this distant land that the duo of killer robots will uncover their past, explore the world, and battle many an opponent.​
The reason why I can't reveal how they end up on the surface in the first place, is:​
A. Time and text constraints.​
B. Way too much exposition if I had to type this.​
So please, tell me, to anyone who reads this latest post,​
What do you think of this concept? How could it be made better? I've already finished the 10-page long script, but that doesn't mean it's done yet.​

I can now reveal the final names of the three characters previously mentioned: The professor is Professor Marx, creator of Quote and Curly, as well as the killer robot, whose name is now Ellipsis

You've got names for your characters? That's always my biggest obstacle when it comes to creating fanfics/mod ideas. Anyways, it sounds like you've done some pretty thorough planning for the story. The focus on the red crystal is quite intriguing, actually, I always assumed it was destroyed, along with the Doctor.

I was reading your blog, and it looks like you're making the game with Game Maker, is that so?

Gamemaker on my computer, and that's the fact that it...
can't run the game that I'm coding. So instead, I'll need to send the .gmx file to my colleagues to play test it instead.

Also: give us some content and people will begin offering to help. Until then, you're not going to get much in the way of online help.
Which reminds me- consider using the CS engine. It's versatile, easy (enough) to change, and most importantly, it's well-documented. It'll be harder to get help if you're not working in a foreign system.

I apologize for the tough crowd. The problem is we've been hardened by four years of seeing an abandoned idea every week. Most people here are predicting a 90% chance that this will be abandoned. Others predict a 95% chance. Some predict an even higher likelihood than that. I apologize for the skepticism, it isn't your fault. One guy was even doing a project very similar to what you're describing, and it's been over a year-and-a-half since we last heard from him. Prove that you're not like him, and you'll get twice the glory.

Hey, I was reading you blog, and I was curious if 'sound director' basically just means music guy. If so, I'd be MORE than happy to help. Making music for video game scenarios is something that I do in my spare time xD well, with the not huge amount of spare time that I have at the moment...

I really had no idea the cancellation rate was that high. I mean, I see mods of Cave Story advertised on Youtube via 'my recommendations' all the time. I didn't expect this...

Well.

At the very least, this motivated me further to make sure I complete this project.

I, Tsubasa "Nadojin" Shima hereby swear that I will complete this project,
Project CS2: Another Cave Story Sequel no matter the obstacles that I may face as part of development. I do not set a deadline for myself, but I WILL get this project done. If I do not uphold these terms, I will face full-punishment of: Hate, rage, and banishment from the forums all together.

I've sworn my allegiance. I can't back out now.

I'm going to work on this for years, I bet, but I can't quit. I've already faced mockery from my own friends, who constantly tell me just to give up.

I WILL NOT.
I'm actually doing this partially to help with my dream job/college application.
And thanks, Hayden Studios, for telling me that. I would have never occurred to me otherwise. Also, you just gave me a ton of moral support.

MrLog, I'd be more than happy to welcome you as part of the team.
We've needed a Sound Director for so much time now, and have just basically been surviving off remixes for the time being.
But before I can hire you, I have a couple things to ask.

Are you familiar with the entire Cave Story soundtrack, and understand why it enhances the environments?
Next, are you fine with no income from this project, as it is an entirely no-profit project?
Finally, can you create completely original music, instead of remixes?

I look forward to your response.

Consequences to quitting the project:

- My account for the forums gets deactivated.
- As much hate and rage as you guys can possibly conjure.
- And what else your devious imaginations can think of.

I accept the gravity of this ideal to the full extent.

I don't think you realize that if this project dies most of us won't care, and we certainly won't break rules to enforce these consequences that you've made for yourself
