I agree with the open-world sidequest thing. I try to make my things more like that, but I end up making them
"Wake up"
"Get Sword"
"Go to Throne Room"
"Go to town"
Go to bed...
...fight boss...
fight another boss,
go to forest
survive ruins
fight another boss
get out of ruins
return jet pack
talk to megusha...
etc etc

There's nothing inherently wrong with more linear games or more open-world games; while gamers appreciate the effort people can go through to do open-world stuff, with scaling and all, it's extremely tough to do. Linearity is a safe route to take, and most games with "open-world" experiences sometimes wind back to a linear near the end of their games anyway.

Yep. Plus, open world games are a b*tch-and-a-half to code sometimes
I hate how ALL of the characters in my games have multiple lines, including random characters that stand around
"I actually forgot where I live."

Tell me less about the details Pixel put into his writing and more about Yaoi, I inherited the spirit of Lillin to defeat everyone with that gay shit.

(Yaoi and Jack should never be in the same scentence because one 12 ruined it for us)

I'd personally not like to derail this topic too far, but open world games aren't difficult to program, depending on the engine you use.
I use game maker, and my passion/hate project has been in development for three years, the hardest part about making it open world is actually just getting the story to work properly with it.
Having an open world with nothing to interact with is boring, but a smaller sized world with tons to do is perfect.
Start small and iterate from there, that's how I'm handling it.

Thanks.
Back to topic (for like the third time)
Itoh is a somewhat unneeded character who could have been easily replaced with a key on a gravestone (like Arthur) but he exists anyways.

Yeah. That’s really my only reason for hating him. Like I said before, I find it annoying when characters like him are introduced late game with absolutely no reference to them earlier. Momorin was forshowed but Itoh was just kinda there.

Guys, this thread is easily no debate. The worst and most useless character in Cave Story is Jack. He's such a huge waste of npc code, it's already evident that Pixel gave up on him not even halfway through the game. Jack is a number two alright, a big fat, flippin' piece of rabbit doodoo!

is it just me or is jack always pointing his finger or am I seeing his sprite incorrectly?

Itoh is needed to operate helicopter.
Jack is needed for a card game reference(king and jack).

Well, 90% of Mimiga Village is dead, so there probably was one at some point

Huh, reminds me of Deltarune.
But wait. How do you know that it was 90% of them who died? What if there was only twenty-seven of them?

Hmm, how many do the Shovel Brigades, Mimiga prisoners, dead mimigas (Arthur, King, Toroko), Chie, Megane, and Zett make? Because excluding Sue, Igor, Santa, Chako, the Grasstown ravil, and the Colons, the mimigas seen in the Plantation should be from Mimiga Village

...I believe that's still less than 50.
By SimCity standards, it's not a town til 2,000. But a village....I forget. It's been like three months.

It's reasonable to say that there's about 30 mimiga, but I wouldn't want to live in that village if there were only two houses, and one of them was a public building.

Arthur had a monopoly on the housing market, no wonder the doctor wanted him dead.

Come to think of it, where do Mahin, Sandaime, Jack, and Kanpachi sleep in?

Don't forget the shack, and if you can reach it, the area around the First Cave door is ok as long as you don't sleep walk.
I'd classify the building Mahin is in as a building.
Never forget about the Save Place.
What if Author's house was a place where everyone could sleep, until someone ate the red flowers in the basement or drowned.
Yep. The Author Motel. Like a Motel 6, but better.
(House Noun. A place with a roof or some pots ~KingDinner)
Jack and King live in the Assembly Hall.
Kenpachi lives with Mahin.

I hardly think the shack qualifies as a room, Maybe an open storage center, but there are no walls in the thing (at least on the inside there are no walls?) I'm confused now.

Also, dinner, who the hell is gonna make it all the way up to the first cave? You need the booster 2.0 to get up there. These are bunny people, not mountain goats.

The blocks leading up to the door were probably a part of a now collapsed walkway or building (for example, what Noxid did in Strife and Sacrifice). I mean like, why else would they be up there?
