60 second timer...

I certainly don't wanna do that.

We got a spambot almost directly after the timer was reset to 60 seconds and the stupid Quick Reply button thing was enabled.

You know, I was thinking that as I typed this, someone was gonna prove me wrong about the kept the spambots out.

 

While it was a good attempt at intelligent conversation, the desired effect was reversed. There have not been that many intelligent posts as a result of this. In fact, many of them got even more ridiculous to get there point across. Having to wait a minute is tiresome, especially when you try and get a (mostly) intelligent conversation going.

You say that like this was just attempted recently. This has been in place for a long time, nothing has changed.

The strength of conversation is lost very quickly over a 1 minute period.

What? This isn't a chatroom ffs.

And I would not object to a 30 second rule at all or even a 40 second rule.

But that defeats the purpose - if you don't have to wait then the timer isn't achieving anything.



I say once more: It's only like 20 seconds, it's not a big deal. At all. You are never going to make a convincing argument over the worth of 20 seconds.

That's not what I meant, I meant when you register for the forums you have to do that, not every time you post. What I'm asking is, don't we have something like that already?

It only defeats one of the multiple purposes of the timer (as fate would have it, the one that doesn't even work, as I've already made clear). It doesn't make people who have something legitimate to say wait, but it does make spambots wait. In the event that a spambot bypasses the captcha during registration, it won't be able to make a brazillion posts before it is removed. It would also prevent someone from being able to post something like "GET ON THE BALL!!" a brazillion times before being banned. And it prevents people with slow computers from getting impatient and hitting "submit reply" over and over and submitting a ton of replies.

I never thought of other uses for the timer. Makes quite a bit of sense now.

I no longer have any problem with the timer, however, I realize some of you post moar quicklier than I. But no matter how long the timer is, think of this every time you post: do people want to read this and reply to it?

 

yeah, pretty much, yes.
and I can normally type a well thought out (for lace) post in a bout 40 seconds.

At first, I thought the same thing.
But then I thought, why the hell am I clicking this button so many times? It's not like there's going to be 10 new posts that I have to read within the next 60 seconds.
I don't really see anything wrong with it.

I just find it an inconvenience when you search something like "hell speedrun" and the whole search gets listed as "terms that are used too often so they don't count". Then when you try again with different terms you gotta wait about 40 seconds by this time. :/

Its been fixed, I think. MS changed the wait to 10 seconds, which is faster that I've ever needed to search anything.

 

Wait, there's a button to view new posts?

Damn. I just use the good ol' F5 and see if a new name pops out near the <last post> button.
