    To explain better.. if you look at a tide chart you will notice two low tides and two high tides during a day. That is the gravity of the sun at work, causing the tides. If you notice how the heights of the tides change from day to day, that is the moon at work. The moon has less gravity than the sun, but it creates variations in tide height over a 28 day cycle. Which is why you see little moon phase icons next to each day on your tide chart. This is where the misconception stems from: "There are moon icons on my tide chart, so the moon must cause the tides".

    If the moon didn't exist then tides would still exist. The difference being that every high-low-high-low tide cycle would be exactly the same on a day-to-day basis.
