the deep web are parts of the internet that you can't find in google, for example when you're logged into gmail.
dark web is the sketchy stuff that you can only access via tor browsers.

@TheDoctor To build on that. I might be saying this wrong but, think of the internet like an ice berg, 10% of the internet is stuff accessible by web engines like Google, and that's like the top of the ice berg above water. But below the water there's a whole 90% unaccesable by normal search engines, that's the deep web and everything below it. Like, just regular sites that won't show up in Google, Tor Network black markets and forums which is the Dark Web, and the rumored but not proven and highly improbable Mariana's Web, which is usually just creepypasta bs.

Honestly, there is a lot of illegal stuff going on in the deep web but the scary stuff you hear about it is usually not true. Like Red Rooms and all that messed up shit.

To quote Wikipedia, "the deep web includes many very common uses such as web mail and online banking". To contrast, the dark web requires special software, such as Tor, to access, and while some use it for illicit activities, there are many legitimate websites, including sites from the regular web, such as Facebook. https://www.wired.com/2014/10/facebook-tor-dark-site/

Many people simply use the dark web for anonymity. Sure, some of them may be engaging in utterly reprehensible activities, but others may simply be wishing to engage in political discourse without risk of being killed by their own government.
