Is there going to be any mod support for the Switch version? Dynamic lighting and animated facepics, among other things, would be pretty cool things to have for stuff like the fourth ending mod

probably not, but there is a CSE2 port for switch if your switch is jailbroken, and you can mod CSE2 before you port it iirc.
so modding and porting to switch is possible, but its not easy.

i dont think its possible to mod the current version on switch.

On this forum modding commercial console ports of the game is a bit of a no-no.
Even then you run into the issue where you can't just put the game on a sd card and expect to be able to change the files around so easily, and Switch modding isn't a big thing anyway unless you have an old version or something.
The most likely case of stuff like dynamic lightning and animated facepics in mods would be if someone did something like that in CSE2.

So basically no, there won't be modding support for the Switch version of the game.

animated facepics
That... Already exists, oops. Though I don't think the code for all 3 versions (ASM, NICE, or CSE2) were ever made public.

Interesting! I never knew it wasn’t truly dynamic! On a side note, another graphical improvement I forgot is the water

Ngl, Cave Story Switch could've done fine without the extra water physics. I'm not too certain about the graphics, but hearing that splash when something other than Quote jumps into the water, that won't get annoying quickly.

I can't think of too many situations where enemies can jump into water. The only one that comes to mind is the Critter in First Cave

I don't mean to brag, but *inhale*

- Flying critters next to Santa's key
- Labyrinth Fight
- The Core battle
- Living Waterway
- The lake in the Plantation

I didn't know there were that many places where enemies could jump into water! I guess it's about time for my annual playthrough of Cave Story so I can brush up on these sorts of things

Currently, mods are indeed possible on switch, but stick with modding the switch version personally, to yourself. Uploading switch mods is highly risky, and just not worth it. I'm currently the only person I know who has a modded switch with Cave Story+ mods.

Notes on switch modding as of current:
-TSC is un-encrypted, pretty much text files. You can edit them easily with a program like Notepad++ (Booster's Lab / Cave Editor will flip their shit if you try opening the TSC files for the switch version)
-The menus get really wonky when you mod. I have no idea how to fix this, but a lot of text is just replaced with StringTable::InvalidKey
-Maps must always be widescreen in order to look right. This room looks odd because I ported a 4:3 room for a mod I made a long time ago.
-Music modding is possible if you know how to replace oggs
-Graphic changing mods are possible if you know how to edit the pngs (and know what each file is)

Thanks, hope you found this info helpful!

Weird. I wonder what causes the menus to freak out

Don't forget that even if you get it to work, you still don't have any mods to play because nobody yet had the idea to make mods for it, and sharing here is likely a nono anyway.

And no, you can't just port over any mod you like.

If it's been ported to PSP there's almost a 100% chance you can port it to CS Switch.

Edit: not that I'd ever recommend porting to CS switch over CSE2E Switch unless you REALLY want the water stuff and the other misc things.

If it's been ported to NxEngine, there's almost a 100% chance you can port it to CS Switch.

Vanilla mods shouldn't be an issue, but any mods that have any sort of ASM hack will be a problem.

Good luck on animating the facepics, though. Especially if you're not good at animating pixel art.
