Thanks for playing it, and for liking it! I've actually had this mod sitting on my computer for a few months now, as I stopped making it a while back. However, I'm planning on remaking it from the ground up, with many changes.

I guess I'll actually introduce the mod itself now. It started as a joke mod, with the concept of the narrator being an actual character (wow original concept) but turned into what you just played. Also, about half of the "comedy" came from my friend Jay. The bats doing a lot of damage is an after-affect of trying to balance the Tsohg arena, without taking into account the first area. Sorry about that.
Walrusguy, you're about halfway done, if you're gonna go for all 3 endings. If not, then you're about 3/4 done. All the endings are rather abrupt, but that's what usually happens with unfinished mods.

If you wanna know how to get all 3 endings, here it is:

For the first one, go back to the Tsohg Arena before going to Egg Valley, and use the jetpack to go into the top right area with the door. Then after Egg Valley, go back to the arena. It should be about 5 times harder than before, and once you win that you'll get the ending. It was originally going to be the start of the path to the best ending, but I stopped making it before implementing the actual path.
For the bad ending, say no when the narrator asks if you trust him.
For the normal ending, say yes when the narrator asks if you trust him, and continue through the game as normal.

Again, thanks for playing it. It'll be a while before the remake comes out, maybe 6 months to a year.
Also I just say your post MisterDestroyer, and I realize most of what I said applies to you too. Though I don't remember an icon on the top right corner...
As of now, what do you think of the "comedy"? I think I'm gonna tone it down a bit when it's remade, but I'd love to see what to keep in!

If you're gonna make a remake, I would love To work with you!
I really enjoyed this mod and the fact that It's you're first(except if you did some test mod) ls rather pretty impressive.
Oh and btw for the remake, please just PLEASE some quote x sue just for the fun of it.
I find the comedy to be rather enjoyable, the narratormake me think of Bruce campbell and the joke of Quote fixing the door to see mary sue get out, make me grin too much.
Oh and btw btw, I already did the trick of a the narrator being an actual person, in a test mod yes but still did it.
So Yeah, if you need help with artwork or modding, you can gimme a call.

I haven't played this mod mind you, but it looks like the levels could use a bit of work, at least inside houses anyway.

These rooms are perfect rectangles.

I'd suggest trying something a bit more broken up so it looks less like you're in an Insane asylums

Just something to make it look different and interesting.

I hope you have good luck with making your mod better Dixel. <3

Hello, just played through this mod.

Gotta say, I did not expect much from the title and the description.

This is actually pretty good. It's kind of a shame that I didn't get to play all of it because of a bug(?).

The maps are pretty fun, in terms of difficulty. I do have to say that they're pretty spacious and look a bit too artificial, despite the decorations and the way you navigate through. Otherwise they're well designed.
One segment I didn't really like was near and around Omega. It felt too punishing, what with these sources of damage everywhere:
spike spike.PNG
spike spike spike.PNG
crocorow.PNG
crocoboss.PNG
^ Especially this moment. By the time you get there, you're very likely to have less than 10 health, and then that Sand Croc swoops in when you awaken Omega. It feels like a sucker punch to the face.
There are more spike placements (and very tight Sand Croc placements) that I couldn't manage to screenshot, I'll explain later. But anyways, I didn't really like these placements. Not only that, there were a LOT of them. There are also chockful of enemies, especially the Skull+Bird combo, which, to less skillful players, might look like impending death.
But the rest of the game seems pretty balanced! I like the enemy placements and the way it's done in the Arena (bar the 5th Wave, though, that was tricky).

The characters and dialog... eh, they're okay. Pretty modern. Pretty "xd". I liked Froggoman and (not)Quote. The new graphics are okay, too.

So, unfortunately, it seems like I can't progress after meeting Mary Sue and 16 Curly Braces. After getting that jetpack, I went after the Life Capsule and got it, then...
oh no.PNG
Those did not open. I could not proceed by backtracking either.
Well, I guess I'll wait until the next bugfix.

Overall, this mod is pretty refreshing, I liked it. Some improvements can be made to the dialog and certain parts in Sand Zone, but the rest is fine.
1) oh no

2) This looks like a bug. I pressed down there and I heard talking and crashing SFX, but nothing else happened. Also, this whole map with the Rabid seems kinda unnecessary, I didn't get anything out of it.

regarding the part about omega, just git gud. I got there with max health on my fourth or so try just by doing a simple strategy with the enemies.

got to egg land, i'll play the rest later.

Alright, I'm gonna respond to each of you guys individually, since most of you have something worth responding to.

For BLink, thanks for the advice, but I don't know if I'm going to do what you suggest. I wanted to make the rooms seem like real places. Though I agree it would definitely be better for some variety in room shape, I don't know if I want to go for that extreme. Then again, it is a platform game...

For CyberSoup, thanks again for playing the mod! I actually do have a bit of a problem with the latter half of the Sand Zone, but I'll get to that in the MetallicLurker response. Egg Valley is the part I'm most proud of tiling-wise, though I'm not so sure about the enemy placement.

MisterDestroyer:

This WAS the test mod. Also, I almost took out the "I'll fix the door for you" part because I found it to be out of character for Quote, and not that funny. Make of that what you will. As for QuotexSue, I am going to sink that ship SO hard in the remake.

If I do try to have you help with artwork, it will be months from now. I'm actually not making the remake right now, but writing the "script" instead (in quotes because it reads more like a fanfiction than a script). I could show the first chapter if you want me to. I'm planning to make use of the <IMG command with some full-screen pixel art images, but the problem is that I suck at pixel art. You'll see my only 100% custom facepic in the Sand Zone. Still, I'm trying to improve. Either way, thanks for offering.

MetallicLurker:

Thanks for playing!

Yeah, the Rabid map was pointless. I wanted to make an extra area in the Road to Grasstown, but I kinda ran out of ideas.

Froggoman must never be nerfed, only moved to a less dickish position.

As for the second half of the Sand Zone, I mostly agree with you. While I don't understand your claim of artificiality in the maps for the most part, I completely understand with the Sand Zone. There's very little variation in the tiles, and it looks very blocky as a result. Gameplay-wise, I wanted the Sand Zone to focus on platforming, and the next area to focus on combat. However, it's a bit too early in the game for challenges of that caliber. It's like the difficulty was upped significantly just for a "theme". As for the punch-in-the-face Sandcroc at Omega, I'm sorry. After I uploaded it I played it again, and I could smell the bullshit from miles away.

The "bug" probably wasn't a bug. You're supposed to wake the Curly Braces up, exit the room, and come back. If it still doesn't work after that, I'll fix it. However, I will not fix most bugs with the mod, unless they're game-breaking or progress halting. I've decided I'm done with this version unless there are game breaking bugs. This is because, to put it bluntly, I can't be assed to fix the larger problems. I'll fix them in the remake, but that'll probably be in a few months.

As for the story, I'm going to tone down the xd factor for the remake. It'll focus more on the characters than the humor, and there will be a few plot twists and serious moments.

zxin:

I'll just go over some of your more general points for now.

The title is supposed to suck. Well, it was a placeholder, but that's neither here nor there.

The fall-through blocks in the first room weren't meant to be a beginner's trap. I actually wanted players to find it funny, since there's virtually no punishment for failure. It would also make eagle-eyed players feel clever for noticing the water drops falling through the blocks. It's kinda like that Execution Chamber in Grasstown from vanilla CS, but you don't die if you fail it. Still, I agree that it adds nothing to the mod, and probably shouldn't have been there.

With the narrator, its not really supposed to be funny. The narrator isn't talking to you, but Quote. You're supposed to infer that he hates Quote for some mysterious reason, and wonder why that is. That being said, I can see how he can just come across as annoying.

For the bugs and newbie mistakes, thanks for the advice, but I'm pretty much done with this version. I will implement your suggestions with the remake, though. And the <MS2 is used when nobody is talking, and it's just the game addressing the player. And for the record, I prefer "Memory Saved".

The phrasing for the "Got a..." messages in the first cave is intentional. I tried to give it a "vanilla with chocolate sprinkles" flavor. Basically, you would see the normal message and think everything's normal, before the narrator acts like a dick to you. I thought it would give it a bit more punch, you know?

You're supposed to have the Polar Star filled up by the time you get to the first boss, so it can be easier. Though I will agree that the boss is a bit too easy.

"Babby" makes me want to die too. I don't know why I wrote that.

"embraec teh babby" -Jay

Yeah, the story is all over the place at the start. I think it gets better, but at the start nobody acts realistically. Quote is boring, and Mary Sue does barely anything to be the asshole the mod claims her to be. This is all due to making the plot up as I went along. Case in point is the lack of interaction between Quote and Mary Sue. You never get a feel for their dislike of each other, other than a short remark by Mary Sue. I once wondered if I had too much story in the mod, but now I realize I have too many jokes and not enough story.

You're going to hate the alternate arena.

Okay, so I've noticed most of the flaws you pointed out, almost all of them due to it starting out as a test mod. Thanks for the criticism.

I'll be sure to keep playing this tomorrow, since it's actually a pretty good mod. I'm not really a fan of the humor, but the gameplay is on point. The designs of the caves and enemy placement is the perfect mixture of chaos for the player and I love it. When playing Cave Story, a lot of people just go about it in a run and gun sort of way, but this mod really makes you think about what you're about to do. With the section before Omega, yeah, it's hard. However, if you come up with a good enemy killing strategy you can plan it so you can enter the fight with max weapons and xp, so it makes you think. Took me a couple tries, but in the end I was super satisfied. Personally I think you should leave it this way.

might wanna fix your post, his name's zxin with a lowercase z. he might get a bit annoyed at ya if you dont. thats all.

But wow, I haven't seen a first mod like this in a while. (it is your first, right?) Definitely reminds me of the days of old when most mods were like this. Passionate and exciting. Nowadays everyone's trying to come up with the next big thing so it's kind of hard to not get caught up in all that. Keep at it, and things should go well for you.

Fixed the zxin thing.

Yeah, it's my first mod. It started out as a test to see how CS modding works. After a bit, I made it my goal to make "Cavern Tale with new level design" since the lack of originality in Cavern Tale's gameplay was its biggest detriment to me, to the point where I didn't finish it. I'm surprised you like the Sand Zone as much as you do, since that's my least favorite part. But that's mostly because of its early placement in the mod and its blocky look. If I put something that challenging in the remake, I'll move it to later on.

I agree that the humor is hit-or-miss. I wrote all the dialogue on the fly, so the comedy is basically just whatever popped into my head at the time. And if you couldn't tell by my username, my sense of humor isn't the most refined out there. Post Egg Valley the dialogue becomes a little less xd, but not by much.

Your remark on how everyone wants to come up with the next big thing has made me wonder if my plans for the remake are too ambitious.

the lack of originality in Cavern Tale's gameplay was its biggest detriment to me

Yeah Cavern Tale is a really lame mod, though I'm glad that it inspired someone to (attempt to) make something better. Cavern Tale was my test of the CS modding waters as well, so the cycle continues understandably.

I like the idea for the SandCrocs, the only problem that could have been solved easiely,
Is that sandcrocs, take almost you're hole life, aka 2 hit and you're fucked.
It could have been solved by
-putting some hidden heart
-Leveling down the bite of the Sandcrocs.
So I can't lie about it, but I didn't like Sandzone.
It's just too hard(But I liked the redesign made for omega), and the worst about it, it's to discover that since the beginnings, SUE FUCKING HAD IT!...
...Well now I'm at Egg valley.

If it's something that you honestly believe that you can do, with some time or by learning a little, then it should be possible.
I think you've become too ambitious when the amount of work you have to put into your project to realise your ambitions is greater than the amount of effort you're willing to put into it.
It's not that I'm not willing to put in enough effort. It's that I think I underestimated the amount of effort needed.
-a full ORG soundtrack from games like PC-98 Touhou, Ninja Gaiden, Journey to Silius, and more
-fully animated cutscenes
-an attempt at the best story in a CS mod
-every boss and a few enemies being edited by ASM or completely custom
Add that to the fact that this demo is only about 1/6 of the planned final product. I hope I can finish Act 1 of 3, but after that I don't know.
Welp, I continued my playtrough

...Well now I'm at Egg valley.
The arena is supposed to be easy, at least normally. It's the alternate version that I made hard.
While getting hit by the Sandcrocs is supposed to be punished heavily, I may have overestimated the player's skill at dodging them.
And I'll probably change Sue having a jetpack the whole time in the remake...
I've decided I'm going to update the mod. It'll half the damage of the Sandcrocs and lower the damage of enemies in Egg Valley. And maybe I'll fix a few bugs.

Continued playing after properly checking things twice and accidentally fixing the problem.
Well, that took yet another turn.

The game becomes even more difficult from the point of Sand Zone (though perhaps it's more fair than vanilla Cave Story that puts 3 bosses in a row and Sacred Grounds at the end). It's beatable, though, so I don't know if that's a bad thing or not. Still, there are some more questionable spike placements in the end game (whether it is the second Arena or in normal ending), and if this difficulty curve keeps growing in any new versions, I'm kind of afraid that it'll become harder than some other intentionally hard mods.
I say that I don't know if it's a bad thing or not, because I personally enjoyed the Second Arena and the backtracking without weapons was pretty engaging, too. The way the normal ending goes... not so much. The section with spikes almost everywhere (save from some spots), and that leftover HP then carries over to a normally easy bossfight that becomes way, way harder because of the terrain and a level 1 Machine Gun on top of that... whew. That Life Jar sure is tempting.
Labyrinth Balrog AI shoots missiles everytime he jumps. The terrain in which you fight Balrog №17 basically forces him to jump almost all the time to properly navigate, and that leads to a barrage of missiles that you can't really do anything about even if you start firing faster than the Machine Gun itself (trust me on that one. Or not.). I'd say that I would at least remove some spikes in the section before so that you have a better chance at starting with full HP, but... well, I guess it's a real test of skill?

Moving on to the story and dialog... it got better, I guess. Considerably edgier and more cynical, but it's better. I still like Froggoman.

I think I'll have to wait until the full version. I'm actually interested in how things will go from that point on.
1) This is a bug. Not that important, but it exists.
hwat.PNG
2) There's a potentially gamebreaking oversight: if you say "No" to disconnecting the jetpack, go out and back in and check the computer, it skips to the entry prompt, which requires a weapon (which is inaccessible if you do not have a jetpack, of course). This probably means that you're asked about the jetpack once. Somebody might want to wait and save right afterwards, you know.
3)I had to play through the Second Arena 11 times just to find this highly creepy piece of dialog and get continued on.
...I don't know why I informed you of that. Perhaps... make the thing more obvious? I don't know.

Yeah, I agree. You should be able to have a choice. Even if it amounts to Sue not showing up because she chose to pick on Chie or something.
Actually... you should think about that. That could help with the idea of Sue being an ass.
