A developer is working on Cave Story for Sega's Mega Drive (also known as Genesis).

It is still in early stages of development - it's not currently possible to progress beyond Grasstown.
Follow the Source Code link for further information.

Note:
TSC files are stored in a non-encrypted form, presumably to reduce overhead. They have a ".tsb" extension.

What an interesting showcase. Although not necessary, it is really neat as a proof of concept. Just the fact that this exists is kinda impressive more than anything. Although it looks like it plays like a bootleg-ish version of the original, at the least the music's got that Genesis vibe.

Why is the Balcony theme playing in Egg Corridor?

I guess the video was made before the Egg Corridor music was added - the game doesn't use ORGs, so the author has to redo every song.

Props to this guy for his work. It's a bit rough around the edges, but I guess that's to be expected from a proof-of-concept. This is very fascinating, I particularly enjoyed listening to the Cave Story music in the Genesis musical instruments.

I wonder if this is possible to mod, there'd probably be some neat stuff coming from this community (and maybe even the Sonic hacking / Rom hacking communities)

This reminds me of the guy who ported Wolfenstein 3D to the Sega Genesis using the original PC version's source code and some Assembly. There's also a homebrew 32X port of W3D, but it isn't nearly as impressive.

Footage of the port if you're interested:

I might just buy a flash cart to try this out on real hardware. I know it does but I want the full experience. Heheh.

You could try making one, but given the limitations of the NES, it'd be really difficult to put in some of the stuff from Cave Story that already looks complicated to code.

I don't know anything about programming so I can't really make a NES game (even though that would be amazing).

You would probably need to learn Assembly. I think it would be better fit on the SNES imo.

There's no need for a SNES version. The SNES has better sounds, but it has more memory. It would just be easier. It's impressive that they made it for a NES and a Sega Megadrive. Especially the Soundtrack.

You probably thought there was because of mckgamer mentioning the word "SNES".
Probably it was because I listened to some NES demakes of Cave Story music.
