Well, so... Is there a difference?

I personally think you shouldn't call a game, a mod and the other way round. Because it could confuse noobs and it is incorrect. Also there is a huge difference between a game and a mod.

O_o I'll comment on the subject later, but I wanted to point out that you accidentally used "noobs" instead of "newbies". :D

No, seriously, "noob" is rather an offensive word whereas "newbie" is a simple reference to a new member.

I also think you should sticky this :p

Nice place you have here. N00b sounds more internet-slangy, you know.

Should I repost my opinion from that thread?

Gives me a reason to post mine where it belongs, so why not?

And maybe you should delete/move our posts in that thread to this one, SP.

No, you can't. I have an experience about making games and I know.

We can just call them both works of art and call it a day. Unless that starts something that people don't believe "games" and "mods" can't be works of art.

You can't call a stand-alone, unmodified game, a modification - that's illogical.
You can however call a mod for a game - it's still game, a modified one, and it doesn't state more than that.

QED.

QFFT

Though I do call a modification a mod rather than a game, habit, I suppose.

lol, two people voted for you can call a game a mod.
Of course Cave Story is a mod created by the Almighty Paintbrush.

I can't see why you make it such a big deal, SP. Unless a game is called a mod, it makes no difference as "game" is a term used very casually and generically. Do you know anyone who doesn't get the point if I say I'm making an edited game out of Cave Story?

@Impulse

Same here, although I don't go around pointing out the difference to everyone who says game =p

"gamod" is allright, somehow I think.
But calling a game a mod and the other way round is not okay :(
So yeah you can call a mod a game and a mod meaning its both, but not only a single one. I guess. Still I don't like that much :/

I FORCE MY LOGIC UNTO THIS THREAD.

A mod may be a mod but by it's very nature it's still a game in and of itself. It might not be the original game, but it's still something that you play as a game. What else are you doing with a mod if you aren't playing it? The only way that a mod would not be a game is if they turned Cave Story into a word processor or something.

mod = modification (of a game)
So yeah, a mod is a game, since the term game is a classification and not just a specific thing.

You endorse what I've been struggling to find words for. :o

But you still haven't stated a valid reason why you make such a big deal of it when a newbie says "game" :D

EDIT: Sorry if I sounded bossy there, but I really don't think the 'disrespect' is of such magnitude that you let it develop into an argument everywhere.

I thought of something:
How about a little modification makes it a mod, but more modification that makes the game at least obviously different to the original makes it right to call it a game. And of course, it's truly right or better to still call it a mod.

And something else:
A modded game can be dubbed a game, provided you state that it is modded.
e.g.
-This is a modded game called Jenka's Nightmare
-This is the modded version of the game Cave Story called Jenka's Nightmare
-Jenka's Nightmare is a game, modded from Cave Story
-This is the game Cave Story, modded.
And apparently, only statements which clarify that cs' the game makes better sense(coz of my bias, of course)

No, no matter how mutch you modify, it doesn't change the nature of the mod. I might sound like I'm contradicting myself, but your suggestion makes no sense.

That is hardly a suggestion because as I said every time somebody uses the word "game", it is clear from the context he means a mod, but we're still having this discussion here, aren't we?

Lol I feel that it isn't right to call a mod a game cause if you call a simple mod a game, then that would put all those hard workers that made actual GAMES on the same level as us simple modders...

It isn't right to catagorise a mod as a game if that's what you mean. But casually calling a mod a game for convenience of speech/lack of terminal knowledge is fine IMO.
