It strikes me as odd that no one whould have tried to achive good with the crown. If I had acces to something that powerfull I whould try to make the world a better place. I would still probably be somewhat corrupt, as whould anyone with so much power; however I still wouldn't be such a jerk, or bent on world domination for that matter. Thus, I find it likely since ballos has allredy cursed the crown (binding misery and balrog to it) that it drives it's wielders insane, or mabe posesses them.

Who's to say that the crown bearers weren't influenced by the crown? Like Lord of the Rings, your "precious" crown twists you until you fit the role of the curse...
Or maybe the crown will only call or work for certain individuals...
An all-powerful magical cursed crown, is still cursed!
(Ballos was a man beloved by the people, but then he destroyed the very kingdom he loved in his madness...

The fruit's English name (through Old French), as well as the Latin species name dactylifera, both come from the Greek word for "finger," dáktulos, because of the fruit's elongated shape.
