Here are some of the Wii quotes with notable differences.
I have not yet looked at the Wii Plantation text and final Doctor battle/normal end-game text.
Cthulhu said:
Hey.

This is highly unusual.
You're a soldier from the surface,
are you not?
Where is your blonde pal?

.....

What?
You lost your memory?
Heh heh...
Compared to :
"Where are the others?"

Implications : Cthulhu has personal knowledge of Quote and Curly.

Igor said:
GRRRRAWWR...

Professor's very important-
test eggs...
Very important!

Won't let ANYONE near them!!!
Compared to : "NO ONE MAY TOUCH MASTER'S PRECIOUS EGGS!"

Implications : Professor is a little more descriptive. Doesn't necessarily mean the Doctor though.

Misery said:
Hey!

You again.
Do you remember me??

That's right in Mimiga Village...

I didn't notice at the time,
but now I remember.

Aren't you that soldier from-
the surface?

I don't know how you were able to stay alive.
Compared to : "Aren't you a soldier from the surface? I wasn't aware there were any left."

Implications : Misery shows she might recognize you personally.

Booster said:
This boy will get us there.
@B@
Oh...
@K@
Do you know him?
@B@
.....

No...

Um, actually, we just met.
Compared to : "!!! - Do you know each other? - ...... No... ...No, we've never met."

Implications : Slight, but different initial reaction. The latter part could literally mean something very complicated, due to the awkward answer "actually, we just met.". Does it mean the obvious, he just met him for the first time, or that Booster met him not long ago, before this encounter?

Kazuma said:
{
You are the one from ten-
years ago, aren't you.

I didn't realize it at all until-
just now.

You are indeed well-made.
Compared to : "So you're one of the ..."

Implications : Kazuma might have personal knowledge of Quote. Either first-hand or from stories.

Koron said:
Our real mother was killed long-
ago by the robot.

And she's the one who raised us,
even before we could open our eyes.
Compared to : "Our real mommies were killed by robots. We hadn't even opened our eyes yet... But Curly raised us."

Implications : Curly killed their parents, and is raising them.

Jenka said:
Oh, it's you, Balrog.
You look good.

How's my stupid daughter-
doing lately?
@B@
Ha!
Stupid daughter...
You mean Misery?
She's also fine.

A new master has appeared.
This time, the surface will-
finally be ours!

@J@
Are you two still trying to-
do that...
Compared to : "Ah, Balrog. You're doing well I see."

Implications : Slightly more friendly greeting. Could have some kind of implication in their past friendship/dealings.

Jenka said:
It's been a long time since all-
those robots, just like you,
came to this island.
They were responsible for-
the deaths of so many-
defenseless Mimiga...
And for the lives of the-
brave men and women who-
tried defending the Mimiga
.

Due to the effects of consuming-
the forbidden red flower...
...the cornered Mimiga became-
utterly rabid.

They fought back vicously-
against the robots that had-
invaded their island.

Who knows, had there been-
no red flower, it's very-
possible that the Mimiga-
on this island might have-
been annihilated...
Compared to : "As did the humans who tried to protect them."

Implications : Specifies that both men and women died protecting them.

Jenka said:
Have you ever seen an-
enraged Mimiga?

"Eating the red flower will-
make me stronger."

A great many of the Mimiga-
believed this and chose to-
eat the red flower.
Then, and only then did-
they fight back against the-
battalions of robots.

But...

Do you know what happens-
afterwards to a Mimiga-
filled with such rage???

.....

It was so terrible...
Perhaps they couldn't-
control themselves...
Well, most of the Mimiga who-
consumed the red flower were-
never to be seen again.

They went missing.

I heard a rumor that they-
supposebly made it down to-
the surface...

Where the humans live.

The thought of the enraged-
Mimiga anywhere close to-
the surface... with humans...
If it's really true...
Compared to : "The cornered Mimigas hoped that the red flowers would grant them strength."
Compared to : "If rumors are to be trusted, they descended to the surface, where humans live."

Implications : Gives a quoted description of what they might have thought.
Implications : Clarifies that they did not float down probably, but somehow made their way down.

KILLER ROBOT said:
...ReBOot...ing...

TEAM 9 TERMINATED.
UNABLE TO ELIMINATE-
THE TARGET.

DESTRUCTION OF TARGET IS-
IMPOSSIBLE WITH CURRENTLY-
EQUIPPED FIREPOWER.

RETREAT!
RETREAT!!
Compared to : "FAILED TO DESTROY TARGET - CURRENT FORCES INSUFFICIENT"

Implications : Specifies that their weapons were ineffective against the Core.

Curly said:
That's the same witch who-
zapped me!

Are those children safe!?!
@M@
Shut it!

Don't act like you're a mother!
Do you even know what this-
thing is!?!
Compared to : "You! You're that witch who tossed me down here!"

Implications : Clarifies that Misery was the one who defeated Curly.

Curly said:
Before, a great number of-
us robots were sent to-
this island...
We were sent by the-
countries of the surface.

The purpose of the mission...
it was the incredible-
slumbering power found on-
this floating island...
And it was also about the-
Demon Crown.
But you and I were different.

We were sent on a mission to-
destroy that power.

The island, it was in a mess-
when we landed.
Ravaged by the robots...

They murdered scores of-
poor little Mimiga...
It was horrible...

And finally, one man seized-
the Demon Crown.

The robots' mission was-
complete and the island fell-
totally silent.

But that was simply the-
beginning of the tragedy.
The man who was able to-
capture the crown turned-
the Mimiga into beasts,
and they began attacking-
the surface.

I faced him and tried my best-
to defeat him.
You were with me then.

.....

That's all I can remember.

The crown bearer was-
surely injured by both our-
attacks that time.

How about you?
Can you recall something?
Anything?
Compared to : "Back then, a huge number of robots were sent to this island from countries on the Earth’s surface.

Their target was the awesome power kept within this island…
The ODemon CrownO.
But you and I, we were different.

The two of us were sent in order to destroy that power."

Compared to : "The robots’ work was done, and the island fell silent."

Compared to : "I’m pretty sure we were able to wound him.
But we seemed far out of our league…"

Implications : The robots mission also included another target as well as the Demon Crown. Such as securing the Core possibly. (think about all the dead robots there).

Implications : Clarifies that the robots mission was accomplished by the time they got the Demon Crown.

Implications : Removes the phrase that Miakid seemed too tough for them.

Curly said:
Well, since you asked...

Our mission's complete so...
I want to live somewhere-
calm with a nice view.
Compared to : "Our mission is over,"

Implications : Possibly clarifies that defeating Ballos was part of their mission. Rather than the Core...?

As for which translation you should trust?
Without asking Pixel I cannot be certain; but I would like to assume :

Localization
Yoko Saito
Rie Hagihara
Ray Griner

...have played the original PC game translation, and clarified with Pixel for any major changes.

I did have a trusted translator compare two quotes from the original japanese version and the PC and Wii translation. The surprising results were that both translations seemed to fit the vague Japanese original wording.
http://cloudstorymod.wordpress.com/2011/05/25/the-purpose-of-the-mission/#more-239
http://cloudstorymod.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/the-purpose-of-the-mission-cont/#more-262

Although the translator did say that the PC translation seemed like the better TL overall.

(My personal choice at the moment is using the PC translation with any plot facts changed from the Wii version)

I would trust the PC version over the Wii version, not because I like the PC version more, but just because I think there was a better job done on it. However, Cave Story Wii has some parts that would fit nicely into the PC version.

So maybe some Frankenstein like hybird of the two would be best.

Oh interesting. I saw this on your blog a while back, but it was much less fleshed out.
IIRC, the other translator you went to said that the PC version was more literal, and that the Wii version was more liberal.

This is what makes the decision of what to trust much harder, because liberties would be taken under the guidance of Pixel, so it isn't as if Nicalis is just makin' shit up.
Still, I think the PC version should be declared the canon one, as it has existed for much longer, and our current theories are based upon it (however, if we want more theories in the future, we may have to examine the implications the wii version offers. huh.)

Also when 3DS Cave Story comes out with the new levels, it would be nice to recreate the new levels/content into the original also (assuming it's any good).

Oh an additional implication...
Additional Implications of Igor's changed dialogue : We only know of one Professor... YES! Professor Booster. He knows Jenka, runs the Egg Corridor, appears when he wants to, can create gizmods, has RED GLASSES and has no interest in leaving the island. It is obvious the next Crown Bearer will be The Professor.
Yet More Implications of Booster's dialogue : Booster says he met Quote only just recently... He probably activated Quote to kill the Doctor! That way the Crown will be his! :D

Actually, in the mod Curly Brace Story by Kaeso (I think) ...
:o
Curly defeats a frenzied Mimiga that was actually protecting her children (the Korons) by lashing out against anything that comes near

That was before the Wii version translation!
Dark Cave Story would be a lottt tougher game
Spikes would have to glow in the dark... Would probably need the map system to have some kind of overlay ontop of the screen that shows an infared or something view of what you see. Kind of like Metroid Prime, but 2D.

I believe that Booster already has magic powers. Recall your theory about him being a grimoire. Now, there is no evidence of such things as grimoires ever existing in the Cave Story universe, but there is lots of evidence of magical peoples (Jenka, Ballos, Misery etc). If you think about these people and what they can do with their magic, it is clear that Booster is far more powerful than them. He can turn back time, leave voices triggered by actions (however there is evidence that either Ballos or his dog can do this too) and do things with technology which can't actually be done with technology.

So, assuming he additionally controls the creation of sky dragons (perhaps magically created from an earlier race), we are faced with four weird things total:
- He has the most powerful magic on the island
- He controls a small army of sky-dragons
- He has no desire to leave the island
- He has funky colored glasses

One possible reasoning for this is that he might be an avatar of Ballos's sane portion (remember the puppy theory) sent to destroy Ballos. (ran out of steam as far as reasons for the above. whatever)

Or maybe just this.

Another odd thing:
Ballos's left eye is always the red one, unless he is freaking out while facing left, in which case it changes colors. Obviously pixel was just being lazy, but maybe it has DEEPER MEANING!?

thanks for taking the time to do this

I've never gone through the wii version myself so this gives a bit of insight as to the translation

I've never played the wii version (might get it illegaly later) but that doesn't stop me from hating it. They seem to explain too much of the story and assume that the player is a complete dolt with no ability of abstract thinking.

Perhaps, but while the translation is a lot less ambiguous, it also brings up some interesting points, such as Booster = Master, Curly = Murderer, etc, that we could only have suspected in the PC version.

Hmm... grimoire... avatar... yes...
Perhaps, Booster is the reincarnation of Ballos, of just his good sane non-magical portion. That would explain the connection to Jenka. I wouldn't think Misery would know anything about it either. (Not that she has any control over her actions.)

Jenka split Ballos' soul, the salvagable good from the madness. She placed them into Red Glasses. Which would explain why Booster can die if you visit him when his Red Glasses are broken. However, his glasses are undamaged if you don't visit him.

Perhaps, Ballos once upon a time wore those same glasses.... (or they are another pair of Jenka's magical glasses)

Which might lead into some kind of Demon Crown theory, using this same technique; perhaps she tried to put some of Ballos' mad soul into the Crown since it was like a bottomless well of power.

As for Ballos' different color eyes, I always thought one was sane, one was mad.
Or someone once mentioned something about an all-seeing-eye, like Odin. Something about he could see through the eyes of many of his followers or something... In this case, all the many red-eyes found in the game; Press, Demon-Crown, Possessed Door, etc
Or there was a theory that one of Ballos' eye was used for the Demon Crown. But, I disagree; since I dunno if Misery could pull that off... (literally and figuratively) And I don't think it really looks like Ballos is missing an eye, from pictures.

@sexplosive - welcome :o There could be a few more things I'm missing, haven't gotten around to viewing Momorin, Itoh, the plantation Mimiga, Sue's letter, and the Doctor and Misery's final lines. Oh and wearing the Mimiga mask and talking to Curly and the Gaudi...

@woodenrat - almost everything is still the same as the PC version, not better explained 98% of the time. However, the style and choice of words the characters use is totally different. LOVEABLE MALCO is not loved anymore in Wii. Jenka sounds like more of a weakling now! Ohh yeahhhh! don't forget Balrog. Bushgardens...? Ballos actually sounds a bit less innocent if I remember my Wii impression correctly... OH that reminds me :

My Great Doctor...
Would you like to eat one?

@D@
...No, that won't be necessary.

.....
Compared to : My lord... Shall I consume one as a test? - ...No, let us not do that.

Implications : Instead of offering to eat one as a test, Misery wants to offer the Doctor a red flower to eat...

That difference is probably because the topic of the sentence was omitted in the original, and would have been implied in the Japanese version. But you can't do that in english.

"My lord... Eat one?"

Doesn't sound quite right.

Topic-comment structure is way more interesting than subject-predicate structure.

I should point out that Igor's professer isn't Booster.

Early on in the game a character inside Egg Tell us about "Master's Eggs." Some players are under the impression that Igor is referring to the evil doctor.

I don't usually any character settings that are confirmed or set in stone during development....

In the Egg Corridor, one of the flying dragon eggs hatches. There was a professor who managed and examined the eggs inside the Egg Corridor. This doctor was not THE doctor nor Professor Booster. (And of course not even Dr. Gero) This person does not appear in the game, but performed tests alone. Before dying from old age, this professor met a lost Mimiga (Igor). Igor loved and respected the professor and continued the work. At a later time, though, Igor ate a red flower. Players see the result pretty early on in the game.

I know this is not a word change, but versions of the game besides Cave Story 3D show the hermit gunsmith's door is in the lion's mouth. The mouth is just a background object in 3D.
