Who created them?
Why leave them in such random locations?
Why leave a message with them?
How could the creator have known who would use them?
Discuss.

Quote created them.
The Map System was given to Curly and she left it in the Mimiga Village for some reason (too lazy to think up a story for that one. Quote hid the Nikumaru Counter where no one would find it, since when it reaches 15'00"0 all the catgirls die.
Quote left a message for future explorers, in hopes that the island would not be destroyed.
Quote had no idea who would use them, he was just dicking around.

The Map system was obviously created by a mimiga who was good with technology yet kept getting lost because he never could remember where his house was. (how else could it get into mimiga village?)

The counter was probably created by the Cthulu, who see everything and know everything. They could predict that Quote was going to sacred grounds and left him a mysterious momento.

I really like Carrottlords theory for the Nikumuru Counter
That one seems most likely

I always thought Ballos's Dog was named Nikimaru. I dunno why, but it seems logical to me for that to be a dog's name. It does look like a Nikimaru anyway.

The map system may have been created by Arthur, since maybe he knew only an explorer could reach it.

Eh, I dunno... The Chthulu-things don't strike me as the omnicient sort.
In fact, I kinda assumed they were some sort of sentient plant.
:/
Either way I'm doubtful that a Mimiga made the map system, just because it doesn't seem very Mimitech.

Maybe one of those blue bots washed up in the that water-filled-hole-thing (word escapes me), crawled its way out and, with its final; acceptance of its fate built a sort of tribute to itself.

I didn't see you post before I posted that, and I was just sort of putting it out there.

But due to the fact that Arthur faced the Red Demon which is in one of the highest parts of the Island I would say Arthur saw a lot more of the Island than most people did.

Really? I have to get back to playing the actual game and not just the mods then.
I remember the game saying he saved the village, but I don't think it specified against what. :\

Though this assumes that he went to it, not that it was raiding the villiage.
Could go either way, and the Beast Fang seems to indicate it invaded.

IIRC, isn't it the NikUmaru counter? maybe I'm just stupid, or maybe it's the fact I'm playing the mac version, but I'm fairly certain it's Nikumaru...

Nikumaru... I just googled it randomly and saw this :
"Nikumaru, meaning "meatball" in Japanese"
lol umm...

Not sure.

As for the map system I thought the gunsmith could have made that. Maybe before he became an old hermit? It is awfully close to the village...

Actually, the "nikumaru" counter was translated correctly to the 290 counter in the wiiware version. It's common in japan to associate the numbers with different pronounciations and stuff, "ni" is 2, "ku" is 9, and "maru" is 0 (maru litterally means circle).

If you want to read into it more, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_wordplay
