It was never explained, but we know that Misery and Balrog would kidnap more villagers if he didn't get it (according to King), and that King getting the key would hurt Sue somehow (according to Toroko). In this thread you can post any ideas you have, no matter how insane. I'll let someone else do the obvious stuff, here's my theory:
Red flowers, when crushed into a powder and mixed with Pignon juice and grass, make a powerful narcotic, like cocaine. The reason there are red petals scattered around Arthur's bed downstairs is because that's King's stash. That's also why his eyes are tinged red. Toroko takes the key, for whatever reason, and King tries to get it back from her before he goes into withdrawl. Quote unlocks Arthur's house later, but King doesn't notice until Sue gets on the computer with Kazuma. I assume that after tying Sue up and putting her in the cage, he went downstairs to feed his addiction.
So now you guys can come up with some less crazy theories, if you want.
