Strange Island Explorer Guy

You first learn of this guy when you find the Map System, with the writing on the back. Then, you see him again in the waterway cabin, although it may be another guy. Then, the last one is the voice in Hell. Could they all be the same person? Who was/were he/they? How did they know about Quote?

 

How did anyone else know about him?

Or some omnipotent force that you can't even tell exists.
It's following you through the whole game, but you can't physically notice.

1. The map guy could be anyone alive on the island today (as if), or a dead member of the exploration team from ten years ago (more likely).

There are only four walls: Background, left side, right side, and the 4th wall which is where we see the game/movie/comic through. The idea behind breaking the fourth wall is that it supposedly allows the characters to see the real world much like you can see them. If there is a fifth wall (which wouldn't make sense in the slightest) then breaking it wouldn't do much.

EDIT: Oh. I looked it up and there is a term "fifth wall". Though despite the existence of the term, it is incorrectly worded, there is no such thing as a fifth wall as there are only four walls.

Most likely either something dredged up from Quote's memory banks or something whispered by the Goddess (whose statue is on the Balcony).

Yes, the term "fifth wall" is a logic fail. A so-called "fifth wall" is really just a 4th wall. Think of it this way. If you watch a movie in which a play is put on, then there is the story of the play, right? The characters in the play do not know they are in a play. If they did, they would be breaking the fourth wall. Similarly, the actors in the play do not realize that they are in a movie – if they did, it would be breaking the fourth wall.

Now, what if the characters in the play knew that they are in a play which is in a movie? Some people call this breaking the 5th wall, but logically it makes more sense to say that they are simply breaking two fourth walls.
