According to Google Translator...

Basically Earth is a generic name that anyone could come up with for a world, along with Gaia (the name of the greek goddess of the earth and another word for earth) and Terra (a word meaning earth or land). Notice a pattern?

Though can someone confirm that this actually says "Earth":

地上の国々はドクターの攻撃を
食い止められるだろうか。

I think that everyone fails to understand that from the viewpoint of a pseudo-Earth our world may not exist. Not in past, present, future, parallel dimensions or even somewhere else in the universe.

The ground attack is a country doctor
I'll stop.

(From Japanese)

I would take to mean...
Something about healing Earth, or the stopping thereof.
(Don't question my flawed logic here...)

I think the term "Earth", with regards to fantasy/sci-fi, is not so much a place but a set of defining characteristics.

Such as.
Has life = true
Has air = true
Mostly water-covered = true

So... You don't think other races are people? Ghee, I really hope you aren't white, Celtic.
...When did I say that I don't think other races are people? No, I'm just saying what Terry Pratchett said at the beginning of The Carpet People: that most races call themselves "The People" until they meet another race, at which point the other race is called "The Others". It's quite likely that they'll eventually develop a new word for "people", while using the original word for "The People" as the unique name for their race. Also, when I say they call themselves "The People", that's in their own language. So, for example, "mimiga" is probably Mimish for "people".

...Oh, by the way, by "race" I actually mean "species".

Hence why I was saying Cave Story isn't based on our Earth.

In their own fucking language? Either 100% or 0%, depending on how you mean it. CM explained it best.

Actually it seems that the Japanese text doesn't seem to say Earth at all.

こうしてあなたは
無事に島を脱出することができた。

やがてドクターはこの島を拠点として
地上への攻撃を開始するだろう。

地上の国々はドクターの攻撃を
食い止められるだろうか。

そんなことはどうでもよかった…

その後あなたはカズマと2人、
ドクターの手の及ばない山奥で、
慎ましく暮らしたのだ。

       ~おわり~

地上

Translation: Japanese » English
Ground

Dictionary:
noun

1. terrene

adjective

1. mundane

adverb

1. above ground
2. on the ground

Our planet Earth appears to be 地球, not 地上. It appears to only say that the Doctor attacked the surface, not "Earth". I could be mistaken (I am no expert on Japanese), but I doubt it. Especially since it is translated to "the surface" or the like for the rest of the game.

君は地上の兵士だな!
Google Translation: You're a soldier on the ground!
AGTP Translation: You're that soldier from the surface!

Anyone want to officially confirm or deny this?

I can certainly see why the translator would translate that as "above the ground", seeing as the second kanji for that word is literally "above". I'm not too sure about the first kanji however, not familiar with it. But one thing about japanese: even if you know what the kanji mean, sometimes the definition can be not what you would expect. Still, I'm about 90% sure "above the ground" would suffice, or "surface".

The chances of Earth coming up as a name might be as high as people naming their dogs Spot or cats Comel or however.

You either lack Unicode support, or are viewing the website with the wrong encoding. If the latter, it can probably be fixed somewhere in the menus or preferences (eg Firefox's View->Character Encoding menu).

View > Character Encoding > Japanese (shift_jis)

or

View > Character Encoding > Unicode (utf-8)

Are you or are you not using Firefox?

If so, there's a View menu. In the View menu, there's a Character Encodings submenu. You would want to select something from that submenu.
