I couldn't bring myself to put only 10 games in the list, so I decided to do an approximate top 20 instead.

20. * Off
19. Serious Sam: The Random Encounter
18. Blocks That Matter
17. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
16. Hyper Princess Pitch
15. * Yume Nikki, .flow, Yume 2kki
14. 1000 Amps
13. Limbo
12. Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery
11. ¤ Cave Story
10. Braid
9. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
8. The Binding of Isaac
7. Minecraft
6. FEZ
5. * Touhou Hisoutensoku (12.3)
4. Rock of Ages
3. Super Meat Boy
2. ¤ VVVVVV
1. ¤ Eversion

EDIT: Aaaaaand I forgot * Knytt Stories, * Within a Deep Forest, * An Untitled Story, * EverEternal WinterWorld, * Escape from Underground, and some other games. Whatever.

EDIT: I added "*" before freeware games. "¤" means that it's freeware but you can buy it to get additional features.

It'd be nice if you guys'd note which of them are freeware. Like putting an F besides their name. That'd motivate a casual gamer to try them.

Nothing is not.

My top ten would be...

10. Super Meat Boy
9. The Binding of Isaac
8. Amnesia
7. Limbo
6. Braid
5. Sword & Sorcery
4. Psychonauts
3. Lone Survivor (why hasn't anyone else here played this flawless perfection of a game -- I found it scarier/more haunting than Amnesia)
2. Minecraft
1. Cave Story

And... after making that top ten... I realized I have only played ten "indie" games so far. For shame, me.

I played Lone Survivor... didn't find it really great actually.

By the way, Bastion is totally boring. Just sayin'

Maybe not in terms of actual gameplay (go figure -- I call a game great for something other than it's 'game' aspect), but the story and narrative were fantastic. I love it when games make you work to figure out the story by piecing together little bits of everything and provide narrative outside of cutscenes, such as the notes, inspecting the objects in the scenery and the atmosphere. Bioshock is probably the #1 example of this type of storytelling, but Lone Survivor did it remarkably well for a game you can knock off in two hours.

Not to mention that Jasper Byrne went in with the intention to create a story of significance. The whole "give the player the option to be good or bad" is played out to death, but in Lone Survivor it's actually much more. Byrne wanted to represent the ideologies of nature vs nurture (yes, really -- check his interviews) in a way that's more realistic and subtle. The game's up to it's ears in symbolism. I could seriously write an IB-level mini thesis on symbolism and Lone Survivor. I wish it came out earlier, because I would have, and it would have been fucking rad.

While it may not be fun to some or necessarily innovative, it's a work of art.
