Tips:
1 General- Play much
2 Accuracy- Use a 400 dpi mouse for shooters, at lower ingame speeds
3 Knowledge- Walkthrough&Tutorial. In a shooter game if one knows where the armor is and the other does not - might mean the game
4 Field of view (FOV) - might improve your performance, but I think default FOV is the best for beginners.
... I've got nothing more at the moment but the ^ is a good start

I don't know if it's newer games overshadowing the hype, but I rarely ever hear anything about Gears of War now. I'm always hearing about Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, and I hear an equal amount of "look how cool Battlefield/Modern Warfare is" compared to "lol cod and battlefield are gay and casual."
But yeah, look at the biggest game announcements of E3 and tell me how many don't give the player a gun and a first-person perspective. I'm afraid, MMXPERT, that everyone plays FPS games, and you are abnormal. If you want to catch up on the huge amount of video games you've apparently been missing, I recommend starting with Half-Life.
Also I don't have any helpful tips for the OP. I suck at video games too, unless I devote hours to getting better at them. That's really the only way.

It's pretty ridiculous that you would hate a genre of video games, especially such a versatile one. Maybe you hate the lack of innovation lately, which is still silly because it's not like it killed your dog or stole your paycheck, but I don't know why you'd go beyond "I don't think they're fun" to "I hate them and people who play them make me sick."
