Gimmick!/Mr. Gimmick, annotated NES longplay.

Well, I used "let's play" since more people are familiar with that term.  Really, in my experience, "longplays" are simply videos of a skilled playthrough of an entire game, making sure to show as much of the game as possible and not skipping anything or taking shortcuts, and usually have no commentary associated with them.  Let's Plays are usually the ones more like this, where there's commentary.  But there's a ton of different things like this that people give different names.

Basically, you need to watch this because... well, I just randomly stumbled upon it like a week or two ago, and was just blown away.  I'd heard of Gimmick before since I know it's like the only NES game that uses this special soundchip to upgrade the music to a level a little more on par with arcade machines of the time, but I had no idea that it had THIS MUCH awesome stuff going for it that sets it totally apart from just about any other game of the era.

Just watching or even playing the game normally you might not even notice all the amazing little things about it, but this commentary does an exceedingly good job of informing you about all kinds of cool stuff.  It's great.  Make sure to watch all four parts if you can, unless you wanna play through the game first to avoid spoilers as was the case with some people I showed this to.

And even though I haven't mentioned it, it only came out in Japan (and Scandinavia, lol) so it'd probably be a bit more fitting to have called it a Famicom game rather than NES, but y'know.  It WAS ready to be released here, but... well, just watch the videos, it explains everything.

I'm halfway through the video and I must say I am pretty impressed with the level of polish in this game. It reminds me of Cave Story in a way, how the environments are unique and purposeful. Very nice.

I thought it was kind of funny how your default (first) weapon bounces everywhere, but the second weapon you get (the fireball) does not, the opposite of Cave Story

I love how they went out of their way to add a sound chip in the cartridge, just to make the game more enjoyable.
Kinda like the the better graphics chip in the Majora's Mask cartridge.

Listen, Scandinavia. I know we've had our differences in the past. I may have said you looked like the limp penis of Europe, and you're really smug about your socialism. And you need to stop beating our asses at the Winter Olympic. But we'd been on okay terms until now. You're not getting off the hook easily this time.
First of all, Scandinavia, you're not even a country. You're a reigon. A large-scale geographical formation. Stop acting like you're better than us, because we can all clearly see Norway, Sweden and Finland hanging out together, but they're still separate. You're not some kind of Voltron-like combination of all three. So stop acting like it.

And now. AND NOW. You have the GALL to be the ONLY place outside of Japan that got this masterpeice of an NES game. You practically stole it from me. And no, I'm not going to blame Japan for this, because you know what? Japan is too fucked up to point fingers at. It's like making fun of the retarded kid. That's just mean. YOU, Scantron, are the smug, superior son of a bitch that is the proud owner of a historical work of art like Gimmick!. Are you just too god damn stuck-up to share with us?
I know SunSoft did this, but I'm finding it hard to believe you did not have a hand in this, Scandinerdia. I'm calling you out, and I am not going to let you back down from this one.
Fuck you, Scandinavia. There's no way you just happened to be the sole receiver of Gimmick!. I'm on to you.

I can totally seeing that little guy being a famous, 3D revamped character today.

Imagine him in Smash Bros.

But anyway, this game looks amazing considering it's time period, and even without that time put into perspective it still looks amazing. I wanna play it, but don't really feel like downloading an emulator.
