Base 10 Story, Foster Story and Butch Nukem Mods

15 August 2011 - 11:31 AM

Hello Cave Story Modding Community,

I am happy to announce that I a few mods to
share with you. I have often been on these
forums asking questions, so I'm really happy to
finally be able to give back to this community.

The first of 3 mods I would like to present is
titled Base 10 Story. This was a mod I made
for a class at my university in Corvallis, OR.
The class was a Women's Studies class that
examined how women were forced out of
careers in the scientific fields. The novel it
is based off-of is titled Base 10 by
Maryann Lessert.

Please note that this is a very short mod:

Next, the second mod I would like to present
is titled Foster Story based off of the television
show Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends
by Craig McCracken on Cartoon Network.
To be honest, it's based more off some
fan-fiction story (not my own)
on Fanfiction.net than the
actual show. The story in this mod
is not the greatest either...
Finally, I don't know if mods
based off copyrighted work are
allowed (some rule that I missed)
so just PM me if this is the case
and I will remove this particular mod.

My third and final mod is somewhat controversial
but is the longest and most complex mod
that I have made so far. It can be sumed up
as "A Lesbian version of Duke Nukem fights the
Westboro Baptist Church turned terrorist
organization.". This mod, I want to restate,
may be offensive to religious individuals
(mostly baptists), republicans, and others.
Viewer Discretion is strongly advised due to
strong offensive language as well. No flaming
or trolling, AND PLEASE! We don't need a
discussion about gay marriage HERE!
Leave that for CNN.com or some other
political news website...arguments like
this on the internet seem to bring
out the worst in people

Now that all that is out of the way...

Errors With Modding Programs

27 July 2010 - 12:52 AM

Hey,

BackyardcabinXY again,

I recently posted about cave story mods, and a member provided a tutorial line on how to begin modding. I have looked at it, but seem to be running into quite a few problems, and I'm not even coding/scripting yet.

It seems that the biggest problem I have is saving the changes I make to the maps in the original cave story. If I choose Map > Save in the program Cave Editor I get an error that states it can't save map data:

Error: Error saving map data

This occurs even if I remove the Pixel requirement for images or uncheck the "read only" box in the preferences for the program.

Another big problem is editing scripts in Cave Editor. If I choose:
Edit > Script the program quits on me. I get an error that reads:

"The Cave Story Editor has stopped working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Edit > Script:  the program gives me the error message "Out Of Memory" sometimes

I am using Windows 7 professional with 2GB of ram. Isn't that enough, or is my computer that my friend made me not up to snuff to make these mods?

Additionally, if I try Sue's Workshop instead of Cave Editor
File > Load game > Doukutsu works but
Maps > double click any map > Error: Can't Load Tileset

None of the tiles for the maps show up
Removing the pixel requirement removes the maps entirely from the sidebar list

The two things that do kind of work is the pure script editor CS Script (static linked) the non-static linked one does not work

I can edit the scripts fine with this program, and the changes do save properly, but it is a bit difficult to understand what is going on, I'd prefer the cave editor script editor...

Making a new map in Cave Story Map Editor allows you to save, but I would like to edit a previous map if I can (if I can't, I'll make do) since that would be easier that making one from scratch...

Bottom line, if you can help me that would be great, but if you can't NBD (no big deal). I am working on a mod of cave story in flash (AS2 not the new AS3) and despite the older (non flixel, the engine that made the cave story esque game  titled Condition) code it works pretty well. I even have boss and player health bars working. Despite this, I do think the code for cave story is very interesting titled TSC (I think it was called) so if you can determine how I can fix these errors popping up that would be great.

Thanks again for your help and input in giving me that mod list earlier. It's nice to see which ones are actually complete. I enjoyed playing some of them greatly...

Thanks again for all your help,
BackyardcabinXY

Completed Mods?

23 July 2010 - 07:15 AM

Hey,

I've been looking at these forums after having a revived interest in cave story mods, due to the fact that I can play them with a PC my friend built me.

After playing a few, including Jenka's Nightmare, WTF story, Shcizm, Magic, and Legacy Story (made by a friend of mine) I continually was met with a question?

Why are all the Cave Story mods incomplete? (Not Finished?)

I know, I know, before I go off on a tangent I will admit a few things:

Coding is difficult. I myself work with Flash CS3 and Action-script 2 (and have tried AS3) so I know it can be frustrating. I realize that this is different than the C++ code used in cave story mods, but it seems that by the look of many of these mods (like Jenkas Nightmare) there are (at least a few) people that understand it quite well. (Although a step-by-step tutorial on how to made a mod on youtube or a website would be appreciated for noobs). It seems that coding knowledge is not the issue for most people, I think?

Time? I can understand that these would take a long, long time to make. For example the game "The Underside" (very similar to cave story) took 4 whole years for the author to create, and it is not even finished! Is the problem that making these mods takes too much time to fully complete. It seems odd, like in Jenkas Nightmare, to invest so much time into something (like a project) just to end up abandoning it after all that hard work and effort! I understand that we all have lives and school, but....sigh. I just feel let down by all these great mods that are never completed, some of the storys' were quite interesting...

Bored? Many authors it seems grow tired of working on their current mod, ditch it, and start another. I understand this if your mod is short or really bad quality, but many abandoned projects were quite fun to play, and many players looked forward to their endings...

So let me ask directly, no beating around the bush, what is the main issue (or 3 issues) that prevent you from completing your mod?

I don't want to sound rude, but I think that part of the problem might be just the length and scope of the stories thought up for these mods. They are very large and take enormous amounts of time to fully create. I know that often a longer, more thought out story is better in most cases, than a shorter simpler one. But a long story that is incomplete is worse (in my opinion only, MY opinion) than a short one that is complete with a beginning, middle, and end.

Ok, now here is where you can prove me all wrong. If I have, in fact, there are fully complete mods that I have just not found, please post download links at will.

Note: The mod must not be a re-skin of the original cave story plot, must be unique story and levels.

I really do enjoy these mods, but I feel that I would enjoy them much more if I wasn't feeling half-satisfied after playing them because they are all demos.

Thanks for taking the time to read my concerns,

BackyardcabinXY
