Secrets of Grindea RPG

21 March 2013 - 01:33 AM

Hey guys, just wanted to show you an RPG that I'm very excited for.

Here is video of a guy playing the beta:

If anyone here likes Secret of Mana or the 2D Zelda games, this is probably a game that you'd thoroughly enjoy.
Secrets of Grindea should be coming out this year for PC. It's a Greenlight game on Steam. Pixel Ferrets may also sell it through other means, I'm not sure. I think they are going to sell through Desura at least.

Another link to a vid, except this one is straight from PixelFerrets, those crazy guys that I understand all too well:

A horrific tale of FrozenFire's personal life..

19 February 2013 - 03:49 AM

As the title suggests, I've got a real-life incident to share. It's not much of a "tale" to tell, just some stuff about a work day gone wrong.

On the first of the year, I had a work-related accident. I work at Arby's, and I was assigned a cleaning task that I've never had to do before. The task was to clean something high up above the fryers... : /

I couldn't pull the fryers out to reach the thing I needed to clean and I couldn't reach it from a stool or a ladder placed in front of the fryers, so the only option I saw was to stand on the fryers. I put the covers on to cover over the hot oil, and I carefully got on top (while watching to be sure I had a secure step) and I began cleaning. Well, the covers didn't work, and it's not like I was stepping on them. Even though I was being very careful, it was very awkward to clean up there. I ended up getting too focused on scrubbing some grime and forgot a bit about securing my foot position (I've always sucked at multi-tasking) and my feet slipped on some oil on the surface, I knocked the covers up and my feet went in... yes, into the 350 degree corn oil. Only for a few seconds, but I ended up with minor second degree burns on my left foot and rather severe second degree burns on my right foot.

Long story short, I've been recovering for this entire time and I've finally gotten to the point to where I can live independently again (i.e. my mom has been helping take care of me with cooking food and in helping with my wound care and such).

I just wanted to let anyone who cares know that I'm still around and my foot is doing pretty well, though I'm not able to return to work just yet. I've been away from my computer for this whole time, so I haven't been able to get on these forums until now. Also, my projects have mostly been on hold during this time, but I'm now able to start them up again, though this incident has pushed things back a little. Btw, I'm referring to "A Cave Story Christmas" and a Zelda project that will use the same engine as ACSC.

Btw, did I miss anything interesting? Any awesome topics I need to see??

Super Bash Bro's Ultimate

07 December 2012 - 03:44 AM

Hey guys, so I was inspired by HaydenStudios to make a topic on one of my old-ish Game Maker games.

I found one of my Game Maker games that is actually worth playing: "Super Bash Bro's Ultimate". This game was inspired by Super Smash Brothers for the N64 (this was before any later Smash Bro's games), but it only uses items for attacking and jumping on the other player's head also kills them; there are no physical attacks like using fists and kicking.

Though a good amount of it is for 2 players only, there are a number of mini games that are actually pretty enjoyable and it makes this worth a download even if you don't plan on doing any 2 player stuff at all. I highly recommend trying out Peach's Nightmare, if anything (and you haven't truly beaten this mini game until you can find and defeat Big Boo.. can you do it?? heh heh).

I've included a save with the "Peach's Nightmare" mini game already unlocked, because I know how hard it is to find all of the unlockable content. There is also a code to unlock everything, and I can message it to you if you want. I created the "unlock all" code because the system for unlocking things was the game's major flaw. It's flawed because of the many times that it relies on 2 active players for the unlocking on various things. That said, it is possible to unlock everything with only one player, but it's just.. odd to do so. This was an oversight on my part. When I made this game, I wasn't as bright as I am today; I'd never create such a weird unlocking system. It's sad because there are some cool things to unlock that many people will probably never see, unless they use the unlock all cheat.

Just to give you an idea on what you can unlock: The mini games include: Scrolling shooters, a bomberman style game, some classic platforming action of the Mario and Peach kind, a pipe maze, and more. And there are some fairly entertaining short movies/animations as well. Of course, there is a good amount of unlockable multi-player content as well, being characters and stages.

Note: If you want to unlock everything yourself, simply delete the save file that comes with it. There are only two things unlocked in the current save file: The Pipe Master mini game and Peach's Nightmare mini game. If you want to unlock everything yourself, but you want to know how to unlock everything, I have a master list of all the unlockable content that tells how to unlock everything.

EDIT:
The odd error has been fixed. This error was caused by some weird persistent thing that ended up being screwed up from porting to GM8. It still makes no sense why it messed up, but it works fine now that it has been removed (it had to do with turning the sound on/off, so that option is now gone, but it's not a big deal).

Suggestion.. make Firefox work with the forums again..?

22 November 2012 - 02:01 AM

First, I apologize if this is not a good place to voice this. I looked around and couldn't find a better means to get some answers and to have this problem fixed.

The issue:
I'm using IE9 right now and the forums work totally fine. However, I've been using Firefox up until now. What changed is that I can no longer reply in Firefox because there is no place to put the text anymore. It's like the text box is not loading/not appearing anymore. A couple days ago, there were no issues with Firefox, and it hasn't updated any time between then and now, so I'm kinda stumped on this.

The issue summed up: Firefox no longer shows the reply box = can't reply or post.

Anyone else have this problem if they use Firefox? Did something with the forums change that could have messed something up?

I'd really like to use Firefox for these forums, so, if it does end up not being some weird problem on my end, then I suggest that it be figured out so Firefox users can post stuff again.

A Cave Story Christmas (Not a mod; using GM:S)

09 November 2012 - 05:42 AM

What I'm planning for "A Cave Story Christmas":
The idea is to make a snack-sized game that takes place after the best ending of Cave Story, but it does not try to be "Cave Story 2". Instead, it focuses on a Christmas time celebration shared between 3 of the main characters from the original Cave Story. I won't say who, because I don't want to spoil it for those who may have not gotten the best ending yet (just in case). The story goes like this: On the eve of Christmas, something happens which allows you to go on a little adventure and shoot stuff. If I say more, I'll end up ruining it too much.

It's not a mod, not even 2D:
The game will be 3D, but not like Cave Story 3D (for the 3DS). I'm thinking more along the lines of Megaman Legends, being a 3rd-person "following" camera style, which is entirely different from Cave Story 3D.

What to expect of this Cave Story Christmas fan game:
Expect a winter setting with a good dose of Holiday spirit. The soundtrack will mostly be from the CSRP 3rd bonus album, depending whether or not I can get acceptable looping. Don't expect a lot of variety in guns; you will not have all the guns and items that you could get from Cave Story, but I do plan on having at least a couple of the guns from Cave Story, and possibly in upgraded versions. There will be familiar faces, items, weapons, and some enemies will make an appearance. For example, bats are a sure thing. The Doctor won't be in it; nobody will come back from the dead. And that's about all I have planned for the moment. At least, for the stuff that I'm saying without spoiling it too much.

Modeling is the hard part:
I just started to get into 3D modeling about a month ago, and I'm getting better as I do more and more modeling. I've been making stuff, looking at it, seeing what I've done wrong, and I take what I learn and use it for the next model and it ends up being much better. Here is something I made a couple weeks ago:
Posted Image
Obviously it's unfinished. I've also made an Ikachan (I put it on the rainbow Ikachan topic), which is lower poly than this.

The programming engine:
It will be Game Maker: Studio Professional. I've been using Game Maker ever since the blue version (i.e. the first public version, way before YoYo Games came along). I've recently purchased Game Maker: Studio Professional, because I'm working on becoming an independant video game developer and I've begun development of an original indie action RPG. Actually, my indie RPG is kind of the reason why I'm making this Cave Story fan game.

Isn't making this fan game wasting time that you could be putting toward your independant game?
Actually, making this Cave Story fan game is not really wasting time because it's giving me valuable experience and it's a means to test out my ideas, while, at the same time, I get to create a fan game (Explained more below).

Why is it going to be "snack-sized"? Why not go all out with it?
For two reasons: The first reason is because I don't want to go against Pixel's wishes (i.e. for no fan-created Cave Story 2). Most ties to Cave Story will be kept vague, besides a few characters, some items, and some enemies. As far as story goes, it will be minimal, because, I'm hoping that if an official Cave Story 2 is actually made, that this game will be able to fit in without contradictions. Anyway, if it's small enough, there's no way anyone would mistake it for a Cave Story 2 anyway, and with it only soley focused on winter, that makes it even more unlikely, not to mention that I will make an unskippable splash screen that takes care of any legalities, explaining that it's a fan game, that it's freeware, and it cannot be used in any way for financial gain.
The second reason is that this game is, as I said above, a stepping stone in development for my own original indie RPG. I will be using this fan game to learn and to test some basic mechanics that I'm planning to use in my RPG. Mainly, the models, textures, and audio, will be the things that I won't be able to transfer to my indie RPG, but the more modeling I do, the faster and better I get, and that's the real time consuming thing.
In summary, I decided that I would already have to work my butt off for my indie RPG, so why not throw in a little extra work on the side and make a Cave Story fan game? But going all out would mean more than just a "little" extra work, so this is not planned to be very long, but it will still have a fair amount of content and length.

When I think I'll be done with it:
Unfortunately, modeling is taking a lot more practice than I had anticipated. Also, I only had this idea about a month ago. I wanted to at least get a demo done before this Christmas, but it's looking like late Winter next year or possibly even around Christmas NEXT year.

Since I won't have all of the guns... ANY REQUESTS FOR WHICH GUNS MAKE AN APPEARANCE?
