Controller optional, I did it without.
There is an achievement for using one, however.
EDIT: no, those are recommended system requirements bro, I played with dual-core processor and 2 GB ram, ran well.
I did have to turn down the resoloution, though.

Hence "requirements/recommendations"? And being lacking in the graphics card department would have a lot more profound of an effect than not having quite as much RAM as they suggest, for example.
