Robots that run on a generator stored in their body. Thats what I think anyway.(and the generator turns off to avoid flooding when under water for 100 seconds.)

I agree with the T-100 theory (deliciously chewy organic tissue over sweet crunchy robot skeleton). I mean he had to earn that lipstick somehow.

Perhaps they were bred from sharks?
That makes much more sense than a human cyborg to me.

If they were part hammerhead, that would at least explain the sees-in-the-pitch-black aspects that has been dubbed the Mother of All Cave Story Questions (iirc).
